AKRON, Ohio - Led by a 19-point and career-best 14-rebound performance from senior Anita Brown (Warren, Ohio), Akron (6-5) registered a 74-49 women's basketball victory past Youngstown State (9-2) on Monday, Dec. 21, at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The triumph was the fifth for the Zips in their last six games, while the Penguins suffered only their second loss of the season.
Joining Brown with double-digit scoring efforts for Akron was junior Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio) with 17 points, while senior DiAndra Gibson (Ravenna, Ohio) notched her second career double-double with a 14-point, 10-rebound performance. Sarah Cash and Alison Smolinski paced Youngstown State's attack collecting 15 and 10 points, respectively.
The Zips finished the affair connecting on 41.9 percent of their shots, while limiting the Penguins to a 29.5 percent shooting mark.
Akron posted a decided 58-27 advantage in rebounds, including 23-8 on the offensive glass. The Zips parlayed the rebounds into a 46-22 margin in points in the paint.
Sophomore Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) finished with eight points and eight rebounds for Akron, while senior Megan Barilla (Fairview Park, Ohio) distributed a game-high nine assists.
The Zips posted a 16-9 margin in bench scoring led by six and four points, respectively, from sophomore Alli Ball (St. Louis, Mo.) and junior Sophia Simone (Silver Lake, Ohio).
The Penguins scored the first four points of the evening before the Zips' offensive found their stride rolling off 10 unanswered points en route to a 16-2 overall run to take a 16-6 lead into the second quarter. Burry led the charge with six points in the scoring run, while Brown added four. Akron tickled the twines at a 50-percent clip in the opening stanza, while holding Youngstown State to a 13.3 percent shooting mark.
The Penguins opened the second quarter on a 6-2 run of their own to cut the Zips' lead to 22-12 with 8:01 remaining before the half.
The two sides played a back-and-forth contest the remaining portion of the first half with Akron outscoring Youngstown State, 14-9, to assume a 36-21 halftime advantage. The Zips benefitted from six, five and four points in the stanza from Brown, Plybon and Gibson.
Akron finished the first 20 minutes shooting 47.1 percent from the field, while the Penguins made 25.8 percent of their shots.
Youngstown State opened the second half scoring the first four points of the third quarter before the Zips went on a 17-3 run over the next 4:43 to stretch a 36-25 lead into a 53-28 advantage at the 4:07 mark following a lay-up from Ball. Fueling the surge was six points, including a pair of three pointers from Gibson, and five and four points from Brown and Plybon.
Akron carried a 59-37 lead into the final quarter where the Zips outscored Youngstown State, 15-12, en route to registering a 74-49 triumph.
Akron returns to action on Jan. 2 as the Zips open Mid-American Conference play hosting Northern Illinois. Game time at James A. Rhodes Arena is set for 5 p.m.
