Zips Claim Second Road Win With 47-21 Victory at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich.– The Akron Zips racked up 500 yards of total offense behind sophomore QB Thomas Woodson (Monroeville, Pa.) en route to a 47-21 win over Eastern Michigan at Rynearson Stadium on a beautiful sunny afternoon.
With its second consecutive road win, Akron improved to 3-3 overall (1-1 in Mid-American Conference play), while the Eagles fell to 1-5 overall (0-2 MAC).
The Akron Zips fired on all cylinders with huge performances in the running and passing games.
In his third start of the season, Woodson went 14-of-22 for 222 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards.
Sophomore WR Jerome Lane (Akron, Ohio) finished with a career-best two touchdowns and 104 yards (all in the first half), marking the first 100-yard performance of his collegiate career.
Senior RB Conor Hundley (Hamilton, Ohio) led all rushers with 119 yards and a career-high two touchdowns on 17 carries.
Defensively, senior LB Dylan Evans (Nazareth, Pa.) racked up a team-high 10 tackles, including five solo stops.
The Eagles also had some impressive numbers. QB Brogan Roback went 23-of-34 for 204 yards and three touchdowns. Darius Jackson rushed for 112 yards on 24 carries, while Eddie Daugherty had 107 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions. Great Ibe led all defenders with 16 tackles.
Akron jumped on the scoreboard first following an eight-play, 60-yard drive as Woodson connected with senior WR Imani Davis (Miami, Fla.) on a nine-yard pass on the second drive of the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, EMU fumbled the ball, recovered by sophomore WR Austin Wolf (Lebanon, Ohio), setting up UA's next TD just 50 seconds later. This time Woodson connected with Lane with a 22-yard TD reception, giving the Zips a 14-0 lead.
EMU responded with a touchdown three minutes later. Following a nine-play, 75-yard effort, Roback threw a seven-yard pass to Austin Stone for the Eagles' score.
Akron opened the second stanza with another passing touchdown. Woodson marched the Zips down the field, ending with a 39-yard TD reception to Lane. The Zips led, 21-7.
The Eagles didn't make it easy. They drove the field, scoring on a two-yard pass from Roback to Sam Browning to come within seven, 21-14, early in the second quarter.
On their next drive, the Zips used their running game. Senior BT Cody Grice (Akron, Ohio) came in on a third-and-one for a three-yard game and first down, sparking another successful TD drive. Hundley scampered into the endzone on a 29-yard run as UA pulled ahead, 28-14.
With 7:24 remaining in the game, Akron blocked an EMU punt, which the punting team recoverd. Junior LB Andrew Hauser (Ocala, Fla.) made the tackle in the endzone for a safety, boosting UA's lead to 30-14.
Facing fourth-and-five, UA brought senior PK Robert Stein (Cincinnati, Ohio) for a 34-yard field goal. With an added penalty, Stein nailed a 39-yarder, lifting UA to a 33-14 edge.
On the next EMU drive, Sophomore S Zach Guiser (Fayette City, Pa.) intercepted the ball, a career first. Five plays later, junior TE Josh McNeil (Durham, N.C.) scored the first touchdown of his collegiate career with a one-yard reception. The Zips entered the locker room with a 40-14 lead.
In their first drive of the second half, the Zips took 11 plays over 5:35 to go 75 yards as Hundley scored his second TD on the day with a five-yard rush. UA led, 47-14.
EMU wasn't finished. On the Eagles' next drive, Roback tossed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Daugherty for the final score, 47-21.
Akron closes out its two-game MAC road trip with a stop at Bowling Green on Saturday, Oct. 17, in a 3 p.m. game. ESPN3 will broadcast the game online.
