CLEVELAND – After being named the Mid-American Conference's East Division Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Zips sophomore quarterback Kyle Pohl was chosen as the MAC's Male Scholar Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.
He maintains a 3.56 cumulative grade-point average as an exercise science pre-physical therapy major.
From Farmersville, Ohio, Pohl led the Zips offense to a near upset of then No. 11/12-ranked Michigan last Saturday. He finished the game 25-of-49 passing for a career-high 311 yards with two TDs, and also had 11 yards rushing on three carries. Pohl connected on 16-of-27 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns in the second half of the contest.
The signal caller completed an eight-play, 75-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Zach D'Orazio to give the Zips a 10-7 lead with 9:56 remaining in the third quarter. With 4:10 left in the game, he capped an 11-play, 67-yard series with a one-yard scoring pass to Tyrell Goodman that gave UA a 24-21 edge.
Pohl led UA down the field on the final possession of the game, using three big plays to reach the Michigan one-yard line with 15 seconds remaining. Passes of 24 and 21 yards coupled with a rush of 19 yards set the Zips up one yard away from the end zone.
Akron returns home on Saturday to play host to the Louisiana at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET and the contest will air live on ESPN3.
