OXFORD, Ohio – The Akron softball team, playing in its first road contest in the Mid-American Conference season, dropped its doubleheader at Miami (Ohio) 4-0 and 5-0 on Friday.
The Zips (13-20-1, 0-6 MAC) were held to eight hits and committed four errors combined between the two games.
In game one, Miami (Ohio) (21-12, 4-2 MAC) scored runs in four of the first five innings. Akron was held to one hit in the first four innings until the fifth inning, when the Zips had the bases loaded with two outs. Brittany Maurer stuck out swinging to end the inning.
Maurer (11-15) was tabbed for the loss, allowing four runs (one earned) on eight hits and walking three while striking out one.
Kinsi Tellep (1-2) took the mound in game two, giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and striking out three and walking two.
Neither team was able to push a run across in the first, but Miami scored two in the second for a 2-0 lead. The RedHawks added runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 advantage. The Zips would not have a runner advance past second in the game.
The turnaround for the second series of the weekend will be a quick one, as the Zips will travel to Muncie to take on Ball State over the weekend. Saturday's game is slated for a 2 p.m. first pitch while the teams will take the field on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
