April 07 | Softball
MUNCIE, Ind. – A late rally would come up short as the Akron softball team dropped a 7-4 road decision to Ball State in Mid-American Conference play on Saturday.
The Zips (13-21-1, 0-7 MAC) fell behind early, but scored three runs in the final three innings, including two in the seventh.
Brittany Maurer (11-16) was credited for the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. All four credited runs by Ball State (23-11, 3-2 MAC) were allowed in the second inning.
Rachael Ratcliffe went 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Taryn Allmon finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
After a fairly quiet first inning for both teams, Akron got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second. Ratcliffe drove in Amanda Ricker, who pinch ran for Allison Dorr, on a sacrifice fly.
Ball State grabbed a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second thanks to four runs on three hits and three walks.
Ratcliffe got her second RBI of the game on a leadoff homer in the top of the fifth to cut the BSU lead to 4-2. The Cardinals would add a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to extend their advantage to 7-2.
Ratcliffe led the top of the seventh off with a double and Iesha Mountain, pinch running for Ratcliffe, would score on a Allmon double. Crystal Hernandez would single to drive in Allmon as the Zips closed the gap to 7-4 with no outs. However, Akron would strand two base runners after two strikeouts and a fly out to end the game.
The teams will take the field to conclude the series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
