Arthur, Corner, Williams & Sewell Honored
December 07 | Football
Already honored as All-Mid-American Conference by the league's
coaches, Jabari Arthur, Reggie
Corner, Bryan Williams and Almondo
Sewell members of the University of Akron football team
have each picked up additional postseason honors. Arthur
(WR), Corner (CB) and Williams (KR) were named to the All-MAC team,
as named by Rivals.com, while Sewell (DL) was named honorable
mention Freshman All-American by both Scout.com and The Sporting
News.
Arthur, a first team All-MAC pick by the league's coaches, led all
MAC receivers with 10 touchdown receptions, while setting a host of
Akron records along the way. His record-setting season included
most receptions in a game (15), most receiving yards in a game
(223), most receptions in a season (86), most receptions in a
career (184) and most receiving yards in a career (2,653). In the
MAC record book, Arthur's 15 single-game catches is fourth, his 86
single-season catches is 16th, his 184 career catches is 20th, his
223 single-game yards is 17th, his 1,171 single-season yards is
21st and his 2,653 career yards is 20th.
Corner, also a first team all-league selection by the coaches,
started every game for Akron over the past four years and earned
first team All-MAC honors after leading the league and ranking
fifth in the NCAA in interceptions (0.58 per game). Corner added 12
pass breakups to go along with his seven interceptions to tie
teammate Davanzo Tate as the MAC leader in passes defended
(1.58), which ranks fifth in the NCAA. His seven picks are the
third-best total in the nation to date this season and are fourth
on the Akron single-season list.
Williams, who was a third team All-MAC honoree both as a running
back and kick returner, was named to the Rivals.com All-MAC team as
its kick returner. He burst onto the scene the first play of the
2007 season, returning the opening kickoff 70 yards. Williams ranks
second in the NCAA and first in the MAC with his kick return
average of 31.90 yards per return. Williams' 31.90 yards per return
additionally stands as an Akron single-season record and ranks
second on the MAC seasonal list (the record is 32.9 by Marshall's
James Williams in 1999). As a running back, he only had 728 yards
on the season. However, he had 612 of those yards in league play,
averaging 4.9 yards per carry versus MAC opponents.
Sewell, a second team all-conference pick in his true freshman
season, came to Akron as a linebacker before making the move to
defensive end due to injuries along the defensive front as well as
his play-making ability. After a slow start to the season -
learning the position, Sewell ended his freshman campaign with 65
tackles, fifth-best on the team, with 14 tackles for losses
second-best on the squad. Also, in Akron's eight league games,
Sewell had 51 tackles, second-best on the squad. He had at least
one TFL in 10 of Akron's 12 games, including at least one in the
final eight games of the season. His 0.83 TFL per game ranked
17th-best in the MAC and his two forced fumbles ranked ninth.
