AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron women's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat Central Michigan, 4-3, on Thursday (Oct. 9) at home at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The triumph represented only third ever win for the Zips over the Chippewas and first since the 2019 campaign. It also stands as Akron's initial win past Central Michigan at FirstEnergy Stadium since 2016.
How it Happened
Central Michigan broke the 0-0 tie when Ella Betzold scored in the ninth minute (8:09), assisted by Gabriella Sapia and Melaina Troy.
The Zips leveled the match on a goal from senior Emma King (Akron, Ohio), her third goal of the season, at the 10:42 mark, assisted by sophomore Allie McMillen (Shreve, Ohio).
Akron then went up 2-1 on junior Jordanne Oberhaus' (Wadsworth, Ohio), 40th-minute goal (39:37), her second of the season. Junior Olivia Heskett (Lewis Center, Ohio) and sophomore Kaitlyn Rogowski (Hilliard, Ohio) assisted the goal.
The Chippewas fought back to knot things up at 2-2 with a 44th-minute goal (44:00) from Rachel Jackson.
Akron broke the 2-2 tie on freshman Addison Hall's (Manchester, Conn.) team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute (48:28), assisted by sophomore Eesha Sutharshan (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Lilly Touhey (Fishers, Ind.).
The Chippewas tied it up at 3-3 thanks to a 74th-minute goal (73:55) from Ella Dykstra, assisted by Maggie Van Wagnen.
Thanks to an 84th-minute goal (83:46) from Oberhaus, to net her first career brace, the Zips earned the victory. Touhey and senior Rielly Chesna (Chicago, Ill.) assisted the goal.
Game Notes
- Junior GK Sara Bower (Cincinnati, Ohio) and redshirt freshman Ariana Vakos (Avon, Ohio) combined to record three saves for the Zips.
- Akron registered a 17-9 advantage in shots, including eight shots on goal.
