Zips Begin Conference Action With Win Over Ohio

AKRON, Ohio -Â The Akron volleyball team beat the Ohio Bobcats 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 27-25, 25-17) Friday at James A Rhodes Arena.
The Zips offense was paced by Emanouela Christodoulou, who finished with 15 kills on the day, and by Lauren Baker, who had 14. Defensively, Akron had two players reach double figures in digs as Eliska Vytiskova and Vanessa Del Real both had 14. Vytiskova recorded a double-double, her eighth of the season, with 22 assists and 14 digs. Martina Villani supplied 21 assists to help the Zips to the win.
The conference win improved Akron's record to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in MAC play.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Zips took control on the first point and never looked back to win the first set 25-21. Akron led by as many as seven points at 17-10 before closing out the set, totaling 18 kills along the way. Akron also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Akron fell in the second set 25-18 to tie the match 1-1. The Zips fell behind on the first point and never took the lead before dropping the set.
SET 3 | Akron then got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Zips came out on top of a tight battle, winning 27-25 in a set that was tied seven times and had six lead changes.
SET 4 | Akron kept the momentum going, finishing off the match with a 25-17 fourth-set victory. The Zips took control of the set at 5-4 and held the lead the rest of the way. Akron ended the stanza on a high note by opening up its biggest lead, eight points, to finish off the set, collecting 15 kills . Akron also supplemented their offense with three aces in the set.
