AKRON, Ohio - Sparked by a 58th-minute tally from sophomore Anna Simmons (Manasas, Va.), the University of Akron women's soccer registered a 1-0 triumph past Wright State on Sunday (Aug. 25) at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How it Happened
The two sides waged a scoreless opening half with the Zips owning an 8-6 edge in shots in the first half.
Akron grabbed a 1-0 lead when Simmons scored her first goal of the season off assists from by freshman Kaitlyn Rogowski (Hilliard, Ohio) and senior Ella Hadley (Concord, Ohio). The assist was the first career point for Rogowski as a collegian.
The Zips had scoring opportunities down the stretch but were unable to capitalize and parlayed a strong defensive effort into Akron's second consecutive shutout.
Game Notes
- Redshirt junior GK Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) pulled in two saves for the Zips out of six total Raiders shots, while sophomore GK Sara Bower (Cincinnati, Ohio) was strong in net in the second half.
- Nine different Akron players recorded a shot in the match led by four and three shots, respectively, from junior Kylie Schiemann (Geneva, Ohio) and Hadley.
- The Zips finished the afternoon netting a 15-6 edge in shots, including 7-0 in the second half.
- Akron recorded six shots on goal.
