DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Akron track and field men's team captured its 10th Mid-American Conference Outdoor title with a dominating final-day performance at the MAC Track and Field Championships on Saturday (May 11).
The Zips' women's squad also had a strong finish to the meet earning a fourth-place showing.
Akron Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Kendra Reimer-Gonzales was tabbed as the MAC Men's Coach of the Year for the second consecutive campaign.
Freshman Timothy Chesondin (Eldoret, Kenya) was named the Freshman Track Performer of the Meet after placing second in the men's 5,000 meters in a career-best time of 14:31.41. He had previously triumphed in the men's 10,000 meters on Thursday (May 9).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) captured his fifth and sixth career MAC titles triumphing in the men's 1,500 meters in a time of 3:45.16 before besting the field in the men's 5,000 meters in a time of 14:22.89.
• Junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) earned titles in the women's 200 and 400 meters, respectively, crossing the line in 23.42 and 53.48. Her effort in the women's 400 meters broke her own school record in the event.
• Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) took the title in the men's 400 meters in a time of 46.94 to win his 11th career MAC title. He finished his distinguished career with 12 career league titles.
• Redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) won his fourth consecutive and 10th overall league crown taking the title in the men's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 50.78.
• Redshirt sophomore Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) earned his first league title in the men's discus with a career-best mark of 180-9 (55.11m), while redshirt junior Davis Hedrick (Norwalk, Ohio) placed second with a mark of 176-0 (53.64). Wendl's mark was the fifth-best in outdoor program history.
• The men's 4x400 relay team of freshman Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.), Sanders, sophomore Tysean Baronette (Middletown, Dela.) and Harkelroad took home the title in a season-best time of 3:09.32.
• The women's 4x400 relay team of sophomore Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany), junior Jamari Davis (Ontario, Calif.), redshirt junior Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio) and Joy Nwokike culminated the Zips' efforts on the day registering a school-record time of 3:39.10 to earn Second-Team All-MAC accolades.
• Freshman Mary Munga (Nyandarua, Kenya) collected Second-Team All-MAC honors placing second in the women's 800 meters in 2:10.37 after finishing third in the women's 1,500 meters in 4:29.81.
• The men's 4x100 relay team of redshirt senior Quentin Woodall (Cleveland, Ohio), freshman AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio), Baronette and freshman Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas) earned Second-Team All-MAC accolades with a runner-up finish in 40.06.
• Baronette collected All-MAC honors with a runner-up finish in the men's 100 meters in a career-best time of 10.26, while Styles netted team points finishing fourth in 10.32.
• Freshmen Mason Birch (Strongsville, Ohio) and Jordan Thompson-Seay (Bratenahl, Ohio) garnered team points placing third and sixth, respectively, in the men's high jump with career-best marks of 6-8 (2.03m) and 6-1.25 (1.86m).
• Horn added a fourth-place showing in the women's 400 meters with a career-best time of 54.45.
• Redshirt junior Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and freshman Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the men's 800 meters crossing the line in 1:54.88 and 1:58.74.
• Senior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) added a fourth-place finish in the men's triple jump with a mark of 48-7.50 (14.82m).
• Sophomore Caden Dawson (Chardon, Ohio) and freshman Logan Thompson (Boardman, Ohio) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men's 400-meter hurdles in career-best times of 54.07 and 54.55.
• Baronette and Styles added fourth- and fifth-place efforts in the men's 200 meters in21.02 and 21.19.
• Jamari Davis placed fifth in the women's 100 meters in a career-best time of 11.56.
• Freshman Sharon Chepchirchir (Kapsabet, Kenya) finished fifth in the women's 5,000 meters in 16:53.04.
• Farrington added team points in the men's 400 meters finishing sixth in a time of 48.79.
• Junior Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) posted a sixth-place performance in the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 62.93.
• The women's 4x100 relay team of freshman Ayanna Stafford (Columbus, Ohio), Jamari Davis, sophomore Tai'Yanna Cage (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Joy Nwokike placed sixth in a time of 46.47.
• Freshman La'Kasja Edwards (Alliance, Ohio) finished eighth in the women's discus with a career-best mark of 142-1 (43.31m).
