MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS: MAC MEET INFORMATION | SCHEDULE OF EVENTS | LIVE STATS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will join the rest of their Mid-American Conference members this Thursday through Saturday, May 9-11, to compete at the league's Outdoor Championships, as Northern Illinois hosts the three-day event at the NIU Track and Field Complex in DeKalb, Ill.

In all, the championship meet will feature men's teams from Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Miami, while all 12 league members will be chasing the title on the women's side.

The Zips' men squad will be looking to capture its 10th outdoor league championship, having won nine of the last 16 league titles overall, after triumphing a year ago.
On the women's side, the Zips are seeking their 11th overall outdoor championship after capturing the crown in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Akron under the leadership of second-year head coach Kendra Reimer-Gonzales, the 2023 MAC Men's Coach of the Year, will battle for team titles on both the men's and women's sides again this year.
MAC MEET SCHEDULE: The MAC Championships will begin at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday, May 9 at the NIU Track and Field Complex with the start of the multis with the 100-meter hurdles in the women's heptathlon and the 100 meters as part of the men's decathlon at 11 a.m. and 11:25 a.m. ET, respectively. The men's hammer will kick off the first of five field event championships on the day at noon ET, while running events start with the women's 1,500 meters at 6 p.m. ET, before the women's 10,000 meters culminates the opening day at 8:10 p.m. ET.
Second-day actions begins on Friday, May 10 with the conclusion of the men's decathlon at 12 p.m. ET and the women's heptathlon at 12:30 p.m. ET. Field events start with the men's shot put at 2 p.m. ET, while running events will be bookended by the men's 110-meter hurdles meters at 5 p.m. ET and the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7:55 p.m. ET.
The final day of the championship on Saturday, May 11 kicks off with men's discus and high jump and women's triple jump at 1:30 p.m. ET. The first running event is slated to begin at 2 p.m. ET with the men's 4x100 relay, before the meet wraps up with the women's 4x400 relay at 5:50 p.m. ET. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and relays for the women and 10-8-6-4-2-1 for the men.
DEFENDING THEIR TITLES: The Zips have seven student-athletes seeking to repeat as individual outdoor conference champions this season.
Redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) eclipsed 17-5.50 (5.32m) to take the crown in the men's pole vault, while junior Brynn Rychlik (Marysville, Ohio) won the women's pole vault with a mark of 13-8 (3.86m).
Redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) crossed the line first in the men's 400-meter hurdles in a career-best time of 50.47.
Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the men's 400 meters in a time of 46.62.
Sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) triumphed in both the men's 5,000 meters (14:06.16) and 10,000 meters (30:00.61).
Redshirt senior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) bested the field in the women's 800 meters with a then career-best time of 2:10.00.
Senior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) captured the men's long jump with a career-best mark 25-0.75 (7.64m).
Sanders, redshirt senior Quentin Woodall (Cleveland, Ohio), senior Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio) and Harkelroad also return from the winning men's 4x400 relay team that crossed the line first in 3:10.81.
Additionally, five Zips earned Second-Team All-MAC accolades. Redshirt senior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) was second in the men's pole vault with a mark of 16-9.50 (5.12m), while sophomore Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) finished second in the men's shot put with a mark of 56-5.25 (17.20m), Novakovic placed second in the men's triple jump (50-0/15.24m) and Woodall finished second in men's 100 meters (10.71). Junior Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) placed second in the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 59.91.

A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron track and field team garnered a pair of victories as part of 12 overall top-three performances at the Jim Thorpe Invitational hosted by Penn State and WVU Last Chance Meet hosted by West Virginia a week ago.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) was a double winner for the Zips capturing the women's shot put and javelin with marks of 44-7 (13.59m) and 128-7 (39.20m), respectively.
• Junior Nighyah Carthen (Twinsburg, Ohio) won the women's discus with a mark of 135-11 (41.43m), while freshman La'Kasja Edwards (Alliance, Ohio) placed second with a mark of 130-0 (39.63m).
• Josiah Cox placed second in the men's shot put with a career-best mark of 57-4.25 (17.48m).
• Redshirt senior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished second in the men's hammer with a throw of 203-10 (62.13m).
• Freshman Mary Munga (Nyandarua, Kenya) crossed the line in a career-best time of 2:08.32 to finish second in the women's 800 meters.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams have garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2024 outdoor season as the Zips are rated among the top-30 in the Event Squad rankings released on May 7, 2024, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron is ranked 17th nationally in the men's shot as well as 20th in the men's hammer and men's 200 meters and 23rd in the men's discus.
Additionally, the Zips are rated No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region in men's 200 meters and men's discus, No. 3 in men's hammer and No. 5 in men's shot put.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2024 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has four student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2024 outdoor campaign, including, Hunter Garretson, who is first in the nation in the men's pole vault (19-1.50/5.83m).
Additionally, Brian Masai is ranked 17th in the men's 5,000 meters (13:34.26), sophomore Tysean Baronette (Middletown, Dela.) is 24th in the men's 200 meters (20.46) and Jimmy Harkelroad is rated 37th in the men's 400-meter hurdles (51.12).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2024 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, who is majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA, was presented with the award during a presentation on March 8.
Winning the honor for the second consecutive season, Garretson became only the third multiple-time recipient of the award in Division I men's track and field joining Cincinnati's Adrian Valles (2017-Indoor | 2018-Indoor) and Nebraska's John Welk (2013-Outdoor | 2014-Outdoor).
The honor is the third time a Zip has garnered the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON AND MASAI NAMED MAC MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMERS: Hunter Garretson and Brian Masai were honored by the Mid-American Conference as its 2024 Indoor Track and Field Men's Most Outstanding Track and Field Performers of the Year, the league unveiled on Feb. 28.
Garretson captured his sixth career MAC title besting the field in the men's pole vault with a mark of 18-2 (5.53m). He owns the No. 2 mark in the NCAA this season in the pole vault with a mark of 18-9.25 (5.72m) set at the Al Campbell Invitational on Feb. 16.
Masai claimed a pair of league titles winning the men's mile and 3,000 meters in times of 4:07.77 and 8:12.57, respectively, while running the anchor leg of the fourth-place distance medley relay squad. He set a school-record time of 8:02.50 in the 3,000 meters at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 10.
