Akron Continues Stellar Performances on Day Two of MAC Track and Field Championships

DEKALB, Ill. – The University of Akron track and field team garnered one league title and a pair of runner-up performances to highlight the Zips' efforts on the second day of the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 10).
The Zips are locked in a one-point battle with rival Kent State and the rest of the men's field as Akron trails the Golden Flashes, 65-64, entering final day competition. In the women's race, the Zips have recorded 17 points and stand in eighth place.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Senior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) successfully defended his men's long jump title with a leap of 23-11.50 (7.30m) to garner his third career league crown.
• Junior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) on the strength of a career-best clearance of 12-7.50 (3.85m) placed second in the women's pole vault.
• Sophomore Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) earned Second-Team All-MAC honors with a runner-up performance in the men's shot put with a mark of 57-7.75 (17.39m). Adding team points in the event with third- and fifth-place showings with marks of 56-10.25 (17.33m) and 54-3.75 (16.55m), respectively, was redshirt sophomore Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) and sophomore Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio).
• Redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) added points in the women's shot put with a career-best mark of 45-7.75 (13.91m) to place eighth.
• The Zips advanced three to the finals of the men's 400 meters as redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio), senior Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio) and freshman Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.) posted qualifying times of 46.96, 48.06 and 48.10, respectively.
• Sophomore Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) and junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) moved into the finals of the women's 400 meters crossing the lines with qualifying times of 54.09 and 54.48.
• Finishing third, fourth and fifth in the men's 100 meters to move into the finals on the strength of times of 10.55, 10.58 and 10.55 was freshman AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio), sophomore Tysean Baronette (Middletown, Dela.) and freshman Andrew Styles (Freeport, Bahamas).
• Junior Jamari Davis (Ontario, Calif.) qualified for the finals of the women's 100 meters crossing the line in 11.81.
• Earning qualifying times of 1:53.37 and 1:54.06 in the men's 800 meters was redshirt junior Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and freshman Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio).
• Freshman Mary Munga (Nyandarua, Kenya) and redshirt senior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) move to the finals of the women's 800 meters with qualifying times of 2:11.0 and 2:10.80, respectively.
