AUSTIN, TEXAS – University of Akron redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) eclipsed a career-best and NCAA-leading mark of 19-1.50 (5.83m) to capture the men's pole vault invitational title on the final day of the Texas Relays on Saturday (March 30).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• After passing on the opening height in the competition, Garretson cleared bars at 17-8.50 (5.40m), 18-2.50 (5.55m) and 18-6.50 (5.65m) on his initial runs at the mark. He then eclipsed back-to-back career-high marks of 18-10.25 (5.75m) and 19-1.50 (5.83m), respectively, on his third attempts at each height.
• Garretson's clearance of 5.83m (19-1.50) surpasses the Olympic 'A' qualifying standard of 5.82m which will allow him to vie for an Olympic berth at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., June 21-30, 2024.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Akron junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) registered a school-record time in the women's 400 meters to headline the Zips' performances at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational hosted by Cincinnati on Saturday (March 30).
Akron posted two victories as part of 12 overall top-five efforts on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) ran a school-record time of 54.00 to win the women's 400 meters.
• Junior Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) won the women's 400-meter hurdles crossing the line in 62.46.
• Junior Grace Henderson (Rostraver Township, Pa.) placed third in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:49.51.
• Senior Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio) recorded a career-best time of 48.00 to finish third in the men's 400 meters.
• Redshirt senior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) finished fourth in the women's 1,500 meters crossing the line in 4:39.56.
• Redshirt junior Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) placed third in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:53.68.
• The Akron women's 4x400 relay team crossed the line in 3:47.41 to place second, while the men's 4x400 relay squad finished third in 3:17.85.

TIFFIN, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team won a pair of events as part of seven overall top-three performances at the Tiffleberg Open on Saturday (March 30).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Redshirt senior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) won the men's pole vault with a clearance of 16-4.75 (5.00m).
• Redshirt junior Davis Hedrick (Norwalk, Ohio) captured the men's discus with a mark of 165-10 (50.56m).
• Junior Lane Graham (Killbuck, Ohio) placed second in the men's hammer with the No. 5 mark in outdoor program history with a throw of 206-5 (62.92m).
• Redshirt sophomore Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) finished second in the men's shot put with a career-best throw of 54-8.75 (16.68m) as well as earning a second-place showing in the men's shot put with a mark of 162-0 (49.38m).
• Redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Texas) placed third in the women's shot put with a career-best mark of 42-7 (12.98m).
