Akron's Ninth-Inning Comeback Falls Short in 12-11 Loss to The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. --The Akron Zips put together six runs in the ninth inning, but the late-game rally came up short as the Blue and Gold fell 12-11 to The Citadel Bulldogs Saturday.
Junior Andrew Horvath led the way offensively for the Zips, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a double, a walk, and three RBI. Freshman Evan Bottone put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.Â
Senior Spencer Atkins (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Akron (2-4). Senior Yassir Kahook went three innings out of the pen, allowing just one run on two hits, walking none, and striking out twoÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 8-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board with five runs coming across, with two generated by a double from Bottone.
The Zips dropped to 12-5 before the offense got back to work. The Akron offense exploded for six runs in the ninth, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Horvath, which brought the score to 12-11, but the Zips would be unable to defeat The Citadel in game two of the series.
