Allen Captures Pole Vault Title to Headline Akron's Day One Efforts at MAC Track and Field Championships

YPSILANTI, MICH. – The University of Akron track and field team garnered one league title as part of seven overall top-five finishes to highlight the Zips' performances on the opening day of the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan on Friday (Feb. 23).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Junior Cassidy Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) earned her first career league title eclipsing 12-10 (3.90m) to triumph in the women's pole vault.
• Freshman Sharon Chepchirchir (Kapsabet, Nigeria) established a school-record time of 16:42.31 in the women's 5,000 meters en route to earning team points with a sixth-place finish.
• Senior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) earned All-MAC accolades for the fifth time garnering a second-place finish in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-11.75 (7.31m).
• Redshirt senior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) collected second-team All-MAC honors for the first time placing second in the men's weight throw with a mark of 63-9 (19.42m), while sophomore Josiah Cox(New Franklin, Ohio) added team points with a career-best mark of 59-0 (17.99m) to finish fifth.
• Freshman Titus Kirui (Eldoret, Kenya) recorded a career-best time of 15:00.99 in the men's 5,000 meters to place fourth.
• The men's distance medley relay team of freshmen Majid Abuaun (Rocky River, Ohio) and Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.), redshirt junior Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) contributed team points with a fourth-place finish in 10:11.84.
• Redshirt senior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) and redshirt junior Jacob Glavickas (Orwell, Ohio) stand in fourth and ninth, respectively, in the men's heptathlon with four-event cumulative scores of 2,679 and 2,326.
• Junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) recorded the fourth-fastest time in indoor program history and second-best in qualifying crossing the line in 7.46 in the women's 60 meters. She later added a qualifying time of 24.57 in the women's 200 meters.
• Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) and redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) posted the top-two qualifying times in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in 48.38 and 49.00, respectively.
• Sophomore Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) crossed the line with the second-fastest qualifying time in the women's 400 meters in a time of 55.61.
• Freshmen AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) and Andrew Styles (Freeport, The Bahamas) and sophomore Tysean Baronette (Middleton, Del.) registered qualifying times of 6.84, 6.92 and 6.97 in the men's 60 meters.
• Redshirt senior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) added a qualifying time of 2:15.25 in the women's 800 meters.
• Freshman Megan Hipple (Warren, Ohio) collected a qualifying time of 5:00.56 in the women's mile.
