AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will join the rest of their MAC members this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24, to compete at the league's Indoor Championships, as Eastern Michigan hosts the two-day event at the Bowen Field House.

In all, the championship meet will feature men's teams from Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Kent State, while all 12 league members will be chasing the title on the women's side.

The Zips' men squad has won five of the last nine indoor team titles and nine of the last 16 MAC championships overall.
On the women's side, the Zips are seeking their eighth indoor championship.
MAC MEET SCHEDULE: The MAC Championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 at the Bowen Field House with the start of the women's pentathlon. That will be followed by the commencement of running events with the women's mile preliminary round at 1:45 p.m. and run through the men's distance medley relay at 6 p.m. The final day of the championship kicks off with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon at 10 a.m. The first running event is slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. with the women's mile, before the meet wraps up with the men's 4x400 relay at 4:45 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, log on to MAC-Sports.com. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and relays for the women and 10-8-6-4-2-1 for the men.
ZIPS RETURN NINE ALL-MAC PERFORMERS: The Zips return a pair of all-conference indoor performers from a season ago that will look to defend their all-league accolades.

A WEEK AGO: Akron posted five victories as part of 22 overall top-three performances at the Fifth Annual Al Campbell Invitational on Feb. 16 at the Stile Athletics Field House.
• Redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) triumphed in the men's pole vault registering a career-best mark of 18-9.25 (5.72m), the No. 2 performance in the NCAA this season.
• Redshirt senior Kyle Stober (Mogadore, Ohio) won the men's 5,000 meters in a time of 16:09.10
• Senior Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio) captured the men's 400 meters crossing the line in a career-best time of 48.23.
• Senior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) bested the field in the men's long jump with a mark of 23-8 (7.21m).
• Freshman Mason Birch (Strongsville, Ohio) triumphed in the men's triple jump with a mark of 42-2.25 (12.86m).
• Junior Ruth Webb (Akron, Ohio) recorded a career-best mark of 34-7.75 (10.56m) to finish second in the women's triple jump.
GARRETSON AND WILLIAMSON EARN MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson and Jameel Williamson were honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams have garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2024 indoor season as the Zips are rated among the top-30 in the Event Squad rankings released on Feb. 19, 2024, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked 15th nationally in the men's shot put, 25th in the men's pole vault and 26th in the men's weight throw.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2024 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has one student-athlete ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) for the 2024 indoor campaign, including, Hunter Garretson, who is second in the nation in the men's pole vault (18-9.25/5.72m).
Additionally, the distance medley relay squad of freshmen Titus Kirui (Eldoret, Kenya) and Braylyn Farrington (Alabaster, Ala.), redshirt junior Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) is ranked 31st (9:43.92).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered First-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a second-place showing (18-8.25/5.70m) at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Texas on June 7. William Gross garnered Second-Team All-America honors placing 16th in the men's hammer (221-3/67.45m), while redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Brian Masai were named Honorable Mention All-America recipients in the men's 400 meters and 5,000 meters, respectively.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have added eight overall top-five performance in program history to the record book during the 2024 indoor campaign.
