Akron Earns Five Titles on Final Day of MAC Track and Field Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Akron track and field team garnered five league titles as part of 17 overall top-five finishes on the final day of the Mid-American Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan on Saturday (Feb. 24).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) was named the men's Most Valuable Performer of the Meet after he captured league titles in the men's mile and 3,000 meters. He won his third league title capturing the crown in the men's mile in a time of 4:07.77 before adding a second league championship in the men's 3,000 meters in a time of 8:12.57.
• Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) took home his ninth career league title besting the field in the men's 400 meters in a time of 48.02. Redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) garnered second-team All-MAC accolades placing second in the race in a time of 48.96.
• Freshman AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) was tabbed as the league's men's Freshman Track Athlete of the Year.
• The men's 4x400 relay squad of Sanders, freshman Andrew Styles (Freeport, The Bahamas), Jordan and Harkelroad won the title in a time of 3:14.86. The championship marked the 10th league crown in the decorated career of Sanders.
• Redshirt junior Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) earned his sixth career MAC title eclipsing 18-2 (5.53m) to win the men's pole vault. Senior Davis Patterson (Evanston, Ill.) contributed team points placing sixth with a mark of 14-8 (4.48m).
• Jordan and Styles took second and third place, respectively, in the men's 60 meters with Jordan posting a career-best time of 6.83, while Styles added a time of 6.90.
• The duo of Jordan and Styles again took the second and third spots in the men's 200 meters crossing the line in 21.81 and 21.87.
• Sophomore Vanessa Horn (Ludwigsfelde, Germany) collected All-MAC honors for the first time placing second in the women's 400 meters in a time of 55.52.
• Junior Joy Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) recorded a career-best time of 7.45, the third-fastest time in indoor program history to finish third in the women's 60 meters. Nwokike later added a third-place time of 24.57 in the women's 200 meters.
• Sophomore Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) recorded team points in the men's shot put placing fourth and fifth with marks of 53-9 (16.38m) and 53-6.50 (16.32m), respectively.
• Redshirt senior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) added team points in the women's 800 meters crossing the line in 2:12.77 to place fifth.
• Senior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) placed sixth in the men's triple jump with a mark of 47-3.75 (14.42m).
• Redshirt senior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) and redshirt junior Jacob Glavickas (Orwell, Ohio) finished in fourth and seventh, respectively, in the men's heptathlon with seven-event cumulative scores of 4,736 and 4,208.
• The women's 4x400 relay team of Horn, junior Jamari Davis (Ontario, Calif.), sophomore Jade Celestine(Ajax, Ontario) and Joy Nwokike placed fourth in a time of 3:48.15.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Sophomore Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) was named the men's Most Valuable Performer of the Meet after he captured league titles in the men's mile and 3,000 meters. He won his third league title capturing the crown in the men's mile in a time of 4:07.77 before adding a second league championship in the men's 3,000 meters in a time of 8:12.57.
• Redshirt senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) took home his ninth career league title besting the field in the men's 400 meters in a time of 48.02. Redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) garnered second-team All-MAC accolades placing second in the race in a time of 48.96.
• Freshman AJ Jordan (Columbus, Ohio) was tabbed as the league's men's Freshman Track Athlete of the Year.
