Akron Scores 11 in 5th, Falls to Delaware in Extras

FORT MYERS, Fla. --The Akron Zips offense scattered seven hits for 11 runs in the top of the fifth inning to erase an eight-run deficit, but couldn't hold on for the win as Delaware defeated Akron 13-12 in eight innings at the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament on Saturday.
The Zips were paced by freshman Delaney Jenkinson, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Meagan Lee furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Senior Kalli MacIntosh-Houlder also contributed for Akron, putting together one hit in one trip to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 8-0, the Zips first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Akron's offense started clicking and put up 11 runs, including a two-run double off the bat of MacIntosh-Houlder and a two-run single from junior Alexis Campbell.
The Zips lost the lead they built in the fifth, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 12-11. Akron picked up a run on Jenkinson's two-out solo home run off of junior Hess, which brought the score level at 12-12. Middle Tennessee then scored one time over the remaining two innings to break the tie and grab the 13-12 win.
