AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team earned a pair of Mid-American Conference titles on the second day of the league's outdoor track and field championships on Friday (May 12) at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) won his fifth career league title besting the field in the men's pole vault eclipsing 17-5.50 (5.32m). Redshirt junior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio) pulled in Second-Team All-MAC honors with a runner-up showing at 16-9.50 (5.12m).
• Junior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) captured his second career MAC title besting the field in the men's long jump equaling a career-best mark of 25-0.75 (7.64m).
• Junior Haruki Sakai (Katori, Japan) added a career-best mark of 24-11.75 (7.60m) to earn Second-Team All-MAC honors in the men's long jump with a runner-up finish.
• Freshman Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) earned Second-Team All-MAC honors in the men's shot put with a career-best mark of 56-5.25 (17.20m) to post a runner-up finish.
• Redshirt senior Mitchell Kozik (Wadsworth, Ohio) contributed team points for the Zips placing fourth in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:10.66.
• Sophomore Kayla Allen (Lakewood, N.Y.) posted a career-best seven-event cumulative score of 3.583 in the women's heptathlon.
• Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Griffiths (Fort Worth, Ohio) earned team points in the women's hammer placing eighth with a career-best mark of 164-8 (50.20m).
• Senior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) will get to defend her women's 100-meter after registering the top-qualifying time of 11.50.
• Senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted the top qualifying time in the men's 400 meters crossing the line in a season-best time of 47.03. Tallying a career-best time of 48.64 to advance to the finals was junior Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio).
• Redshirt senior Quentin Woodall (Cleveland, Ohio) and Sakai qualified for the finals of the men's 100 meters posting career-best times of 10.64 and 10.82, respectively.
• Redshirt sophomore Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) qualified for the finals of the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:51.91.
• Sophomore Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) advanced to the finals of the women's 100-meter hurdles on the strength of a 13.85 automatic qualifying time.
• Redshirt junior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) won her qualifying heat of the women's 800 meters in a time of 2:10.88, while redshirt sophomore Maddie Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) punched her ticket to the final with a career-best time of 2:12.18.
