League Titles on the Line as Akron Hosts MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team will join the rest of their MAC members this Thursday through Saturday, May 11-13, to compete at the league's Outdoor Championships, as the Zips host the three-day event at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.

In all, the championship meet will feature men's teams from Akron, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Miami, while all 12 league members will be chasing the title on the women's side.

The Zips' men squad will be looking to capture its ninth outdoor league championship, having won eight of the last 14 league titles overall.
On the women's side, the Zips are seeking their 11th overall outdoor championship after capturing the crown in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Akron under the leadership of first-year head coach Kendra Reimer-Gonzales will battle for team titles on both the men's and women's sides again this year.
In addition to a pair of MAC Championships on the line, the Zips will be competing against Kent State in the final standings for two points in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
MAC MEET SCHEDULE: The MAC Championships will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 11 at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex with the start of the multis with the 100-meter hurdles in the women's heptathlon and the 100 meters as part of the men's decathlon at 10 a.m. and 10:25 a.m., respectively. The women's pole vault will kick off the first of three field event championships on the day at noon, while running events start with the women's 1,500 meters at 5:25 p.m., before the men's 10,000 meters culminates the opening day at 7:25 p.m.
Second-day actions begins on Friday, May 12 with the conclusion of the men's decathlon at 12 p.m. and the women's heptathlon at 12:30 p.m. Field events start with the women's hammer at 10 a.m., while running events will be bookended by the women's 100 meters at 4:10 p.m. and the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at 6:50 p.m.
The final day of the championship on Saturday, May 13 kicks off with men's hammer at 10 a.m. The first running event is slated to begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 4x100 relay, before the meet wraps up with the men's 4x400 relay at 4:50 p.m. For a complete schedule of events, log on to MAC-Sports.com. Scoring in the meet will be on a 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and relays for the women and 10-8-6-4-2-1 for the men.
DEFENDING THEIR TITLES: The Zips have six student-athletes seeking to repeat as individual outdoor conference champions this season.
Senior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) captured the men's high jump with a clearance of 6-9.50 (2.07m).
Redshirt junior Laurel Bristow (Pittsburgh, Pa.) bested the field in the women's javelin with a mark of 155-7 (47.44m).
Senior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) triumphed in the women's 100 meters in 2022 in a school-record time of 11.41.
Redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) eclipsed 17-1.75 (5.23m) to take the crown in the men's pole vault.
Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) crossed the line first in the men's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 51.46.
Senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the men's 400 meters in a career-best time of 46.50.
Redshirt sophomore Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.), Harkelroad and Sanders also return from the winning men's 4x400 relay team that crossed the line first in 3:09.43.
Additionally, a trio of Zips earned Second-Team All-MAC accolades as redshirt sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) placed second in the men's hammer (210-6/64.17m), while sophomore Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) and Clarke were part pf the runner-up women's 4x100 relay (45.76).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams has garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 outdoor season as the Zips are rated in the Event Squad rankings released on May 8, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranks third nationally in the men's hammer, 20th in the men's pole vault and 30th in the men's shot put.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2023 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has six student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2023 outdoor campaign, including, Hunter Garretson, who is fifth in the nation in the men's pole vault (18-8.75/5.71m).
Also rated among the top-50 is freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) (38th in men's 5,000 meters – 13:39.65), Jimmy Harkelroad (46th in men's 400-meter hurdles – 51.29), sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) (48th in men's pole vault – 17-3.50/5.27m), William Gross (48th in men's hammer – 213-8/65.13m) and redshirt senior Milton Wilson (Streetsboro, Ohio) (50th in men's hammer – 212-5/64.75m).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation on March 11. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered Second-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a 12th-place showing (18-1/5.51m) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico on March 10.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have posted a pair of school records from Brian Masai in the men's 5,000 and 10,000 meters as part of six overall top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
