AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron track and field team captured the program's ninth outdoor men's title on the strength of a total team effort on the final day of the league's outdoor track and field championships on Saturday (May 13) at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
The Zips bested rival Kent State by 7.5 points to take home the men's team title, while the women's squad placed sixth and bettered the Golden Flashes in the women's field by 7.5 points as well. By virtue of their finishes, the Zips captured the final two points in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
Akron first-year head coach Kendra Reimer-Gonzales was named the MAC Men's Coach of the Year, while freshmen Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) and Josiah Cox (New Franklin, Ohio) were honored as the MAC Freshman Track and Field Performers of the Year.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Senior Charles Sanders (Cincinnati, Ohio) won his third consecutive men's outdoor 400 meter and seventh overall MAC title crossing the line first in a season-best time of 46.62.
• Senior Amya Clarke (Christ Church, St. Kitts and Nevis) took the titles in both the women's 100 and 200 meters crossing the line in 11.51 and 23.37, respectively. Her effort in the 200 meters was a personal-best effort. The championships marked her sixth and seventh league titles.
• Redshirt sophomore Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) registered a school-record time of 50.47 en route to taking his third straight outdoor men's 400-meter hurdle crown and sixth overall league title.
• Masai earned his second title of the meet crossing the line first in the men's 5,000 meters in a track-record time of 14:06.16.
• Akron swept the top-three podium spots in the men's hammer as redshirt sophomore William Gross (Newfane, N.Y.) won his second MAC title with a mark of 210-11 (64.29m). Redshirt senior Milton Wilson (Streetsboro, Ohio) and redshirt junior Jabari Neal-Jackson (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished second and third, respectively, with marks of 206-2 (62.85m) and 202-9 (61.79m).
• Redshirt junior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) garnered her first career MAC title winning the women's 800 meters in a career-best time of 2:10.00. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Maddie Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) added a career-best time of 2:13.03 to contribute team points placing sixth.
• Sophomore Adaeze Nwokike (Benin City, Nigeria) earned Second-Team All-MAC honors crossing the line second in the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 59.91, while also placing fourth in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 13.81.
• Redshirt senior Quentin Woodall (Cleveland, Ohio) captured Second-Team All-MAC honors in the men's 100 meters with a runner-up finish in 10.71. He later contributed team points placing fourth in the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.48.
• The men's 4x400 relay of Sanders, Woodall, junior Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio) and Harkelroad clinched the meet for the Zips taking the line first in a season-best time of 3:10.81.
• Junior Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) added a second-place finish in the men's triple jump with a career-best mark of 50-0 (15.24m).
• Redshirt sophomore Davis Hedrick (Norwalk, Ohio), redshirt freshman Owen Wendl (Medina, Ohio) and redshirt sophomore JaMeire Robinson (Youngstown, Ohio) finished third, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the men's discus to contribute team points.
• Redshirt sophomore Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.) added team points placing sixth in the men's 800 meters in a time of 1:53.17.
• The women's 4x100 relay squad of Nwokike, Clarke, freshman Tai'Yanna Cage and redshirt sophomore Anna Altstadt (Huntingburg, Ind.) provided team points placing sixth in a season-best time of 46.61.
• The women's 4x400 relay team of Nwokike, redshirt sophomore Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio), Maddie Heimlich and Makenna Heimlich finished sixth in a season-best time of 3:47.30.
