AKRON, Ohio – Timely hitting and the pitching efforts of redshirt senior Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) propelled The University of Akron softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Western Michigan on Saturday at Lee R. Jackson Field.
The Zips captured the opener as DiFeo tossed a complete-game one-hit performance en route to striking out six batters in a 1-0 Akron victory.
A two-run home run from sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Zips a come-from-behind 4-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Akron collected the triumph in the opener on the strength of an RBI groundout from redshirt junior Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) in the bottom of the second inning.
DiFeo faced two over the minimum en route to notching the win, while redshirt junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) went 2-for-2 with a run scored.
In game two, the Broncos plated a pair of runs in the top of the second inning before the Zips cut their deficit in half, 2-1, with a tally in the bottom of the frame.
Freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) plated the tying run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a wild pitch, before Campbell delivered her team-leading second home run of the year to give the Zips a 4-2 advantage. She finished the contest 2-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored to lead Akron's offensive efforts.
Redshirt senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) worked 1.2 innings of relief to earn the victory, while DiFeo collected the final two outs to garner her first save of the season.
