Akron Hosts Northeast Ohio Open

NORTHEAST OHIO OPEN: MEET INFORMATION (PDF) | LIVE RESULTS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team is set to host the Northeast Ohio Open this Friday and Saturday, April 7-8, at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex.
UP NEXT: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams return to competition this weekend hosting the Northeast Ohio Open.
Akron will welcome competitors from Akron, Ashland, Central State, Kent State, Ohio State, Tiffin and Youngstown State. The first of 38 events get underway with the men's hammer at 1 p.m. on Friday. The men's long jump at 11:30 a.m. commences action on Saturday before the meet concludes with the men's and women's 4x400 relays at 4:55 p.m.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams has garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 outdoor season as the Zips are rated in the Event Squad rankings released on April 3, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranks 11th nationally in the men's hammer and 19th in the men's shot put.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2023 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has four student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2023 outdoor campaign, including, redshirt sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio), who is third in the nation in the men's pole vault (18-8.75/5.71m).
Also rated among the top-50 is sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) (31st in the men's pole vault – 17-0.75/5.20m), freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) (34th in the men's 10,000 meters – 28:45.78) and redshirt junior Jimmy Harkelroad (Huron, Ohio) (49th in men's 400-meter hurdles – 52.58).
ZIPS TRIO EARNS MAC ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS: Akron senior Amya Clarke (Christchurch, St. Kitts and Nevis) and Hunter Garretson and Jimmy Harkelroad were honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's and Women's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, April 5.
Clarke was tabbed as the league's Women's Track Athlete of the Week, while Harkelroad and Garretson were named the MAC's Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week.
Clarke posted the fastest time in the women's 100 meters in the MAC this season at the Texas Relays crossing the line in 11.54. The performance is the No. 56 mark in the NCAA this season and No. 33 effort in the NCAA East Region.
Garretson eclipsed a career-high clearance of 18-8.75 (5.71m) in the men's pole vault on the final day of the Texas Relays on April 1. Garretson's performance equals the No. 2 mark in outdoor program history set by 2021 Olympian and 2017 NCAA Champion Matt Ludwig in 2018. Additionally, his effort stands as the No. 3 mark in the NCAA this year. The top-three marks in the country this season were set in the elite competition at the Texas Relays.
Harkelroad posted the fastest 400-meter hurdle time in the MAC this season crossing the line in 52.58 at the Texas Relays on March 30. His effort stands as the No. 49 overall mark in the NCAA this spring and No. 26 performance in the NCAA East Region.
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Hunter Garretson was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation on March 11. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered Second-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a 12th-place showing (18-1/5.51m) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico on March 10.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have posted one school record from Brian Masai in the men's 10,000 meters as part of two overall top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
