TOLEDO, Ohio – Freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) capped a dramatic comeback and series sweep for The University of Akron softball team with a two-run home run in the squad's final at-bat as the Zip garnered 8-2 and 3-2 triumphs over Toledo on Sunday, April 2.
"We got two very well-pitched games today," Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "We waited a long time for the offense to get going in game two, but we did just enough to earn the win. I thought our approach at the plate in game one was outstanding, but it took us awhile to make adjustments in the second game."
The three-game series sweep marked the first in program history for Akron at Toledo, while also representing the fifth overall time the Zips have swept a road series (all previous times were doubleheaders) versus the Rockets.
With the game tied at one heading into the Zips' final at-bat in game two, Scheller hammered a 3-1 offering over the fence in left field for her second home run to give Akron a 3-1 lead.
The Rockets plated one run in the bottom half of the frame before freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) collected her third save of the season inducing a flyout to end the game to complete the series sweep for the Zips.
Akron won the nightcap on the strength of five different Zips collecting a base hit, while redshirt senior P Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) earned the victory pitching 1.1 innings of relief.
In the opener, Akron scored two runs in the third inning and a pair more in the fourth inning to take a lead it didn't relinquish. The Zips capped the offensive outburst with a four-run seventh inning.
Freshmen Meagan Lee (Leander, Texas) and Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) led Akron's offensive exploits with two hits apiece, while six Zips recorded an RBI, including a pair of RBI from redshirt junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.).
Croyle tossed a complete game for Akron to garner her eighth win of the season.
