KENT, Ohio – Akron fell 9-6 to Kent State in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge series finale as the Flashes surged for three runs with two outs in the eighth inning at Schoonover Stadium on Sunday.

The Zips issued 12 hits for the six runs as senior IF Breydan Cavey (Medina, Ohio) paced the offense with a 3-of-4 performance, including a double and two RBI. Sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) and graduate student IF Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.) delivered two hits each. Sophomore OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) also had a pair of RBI.

Akron started the scoring with one run in the first inning as junior OF Jack Poist (Hoover, Ala.) sent Pennington across the plate, who opened the game with a single to left field.

Kent State evened the game in the bottom half of the inning and followed with a three-hit, two-run second frame for a 3-1 advantage. In the third inning, the Zips orchestrated a four-run rally with two outs fueled by a Firestone singled to centerfield. With runners in scoring position, Seeker sent two runs across the plate with a single to centerfield, and two batters later, Cavey followed with a two-RBI single up the middle. At the end of three innings, Akron led 5-3.

The Flashes tied the game 5-5 with another three-hit, two-run inning in the fifth. However, Pennington broke the stalemate in the top of the seventh with a solo homerun to right field, his fourth bomb of the season.

Again, the Flashes tied the game with a solo homerun to right in the seventh and established an 9-6 advantage in the eighth with two outs, scoring three runs on three hits.
