AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron softball team continued its dominating run of pitching and timely hitting sweeping a doubleheader from Bowling Green on Saturday (April 15) afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field to extend the Zips' winning streak to seven in a row.
Akron captured the opening contest, 10-2, in five innings, before taking down the Falcons in the nightcap, 7-1.
Freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with three RBI in game one, while sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished the contest 2-of-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Adding two hits apiece was freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas), redshirt junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) and freshman Meagan Lee (Leander, Texas).
The Zips jumped out to an early 6-0 lead striking for four runs in the bottom of the first inning and singles tallies in the second and third innings, respectively.
After Bowling Green cracked the scoring column for a pair of runs in the fourth, Akron responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Campbell narrowly missed connecting on a grand slam in the inning as her two RBI double hit off the fence mere inches from striking the foul pole for a home run.
Freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) struck out six batters to record a complete-game victory in the circle for the Zips, her 10th win of the season.
Redshirt senior P Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) extended her run of dominating pitching in the nightcap striking out four en route to collecting the complete-game victory.
Redshirt junior Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio) led Akron's offensive performances in game two going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Sivek, McChesney and redshirt junior Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) each added a pair of hits for the Zips.
Akron once again struck for four runs in its first at-bat before adding a single tally in the third and two more runs in the fifth inning to secure the triumph.
