Pitching and Defense Propel Akron to Doubleheader Sweep at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University of Akron softball team completed a three-game series sweep of Buffalo to extend its winning streak to five straight on the strength of 9-4 and 5-1 triumphs past the Bulls on Wednesday, April 12.
"I thought we played well this entire series," Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "We pitched pretty well, and our defense was very good all day today. We are still working through some things on the offensive side, but we got some big at-bats at the right times today."
The Zips jumped out of the gates in the opener scoring nine unanswered runs over the first five innings. Freshman Meagan Lee (Leander, Texas) delivered a two RBI single up the middle in the second inning, while freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) belted a solo home run in the third before adding an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Freshman Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) pitched a complete game for Akron en route to striking out nine batters against only two walks, while allowing only three hits.
Lee finished the contest 2-for-3 with three RBI at the plate, while Scheller went 2-of-4 with a pair of RBI.
The Zips opened the nightcap scoring two runs in their first at-bat to assume a lead they didn't relinquish en route to a 5-1 triumph.
Freshman Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) led Akron's offensive efforts going 2-for-4, while Scheller added her second two-hit game of the afternoon with a 2-for-3 performance.
Redshirt senior P Alexa DiFeo (Akron, Ohio) continued her dominating run in the circle earning a complete-game victory striking out eight without surrendering a walk.
