TOLEDO, Ohio – A career day for freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) lifted The University of Akron softball team to a 10-6 triumph over Toledo in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday, April 1.
Scheller finished the game 2-for-4 with 6 RBI, including belting her first career home run, a grand slam, in a seven-run third inning for the Zips.
"It was a tough day to play today, but I thought we really battled" Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "We got some good at-bats when we needed them early in the game and made enough plays to make the lead hold up."
Akron took the early advantage in the affair with a pair of tallies in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI single from Scheller.
The Rockets squared the contest at two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Scheller's grand slam gave Akron a 6-2 lead in the third inning before the Zips tacked on three additional run to stretch their margin to 9-2.
Junior Madison Dudek (Uniontown, Ohio) connected on her first home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning to cap the scoring for Akron.
Following a weather delay in the top of the sixth inning, the Zips closed out the game to secure the league victory.
Redshirt junior Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio) and sophomore Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) each posted a pair of hits for the Zips.
