Akron Wins Game One against Purdue
March 04 | Baseball
Holly Springs, N.C. – The Akron baseball opened the third series of the season with a win, defeating the Purdue Boilermakers 2-1 behind a stellar performance by starting pitcher junior Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and two RBI from sophomore Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio) on Friday.
Tortorella faced 33 batters in eight innings of work, allowing only five hits and one run. He struckout five and walked one, while throwing 98 pitches and 63 for strikes. Purdue plated the lone run in the third inning after threatening with runners on second and third with no outs. A double play kept the runner at third, but the Boilermakers received their only extra-base hit of the game as 2b Paul Toetz tripled to plate the run. Tortorella allowed only two hits the rest of the way, singles in the sixth and seventh innings.
Sprockett plated both runs for the Zips. In the fifth inning, he tied the game (1-1) with a solo homerun to right field, his first of the season. Sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) opened the ninth inning with a double right-center field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior SS Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.). With the winning run at third, Sprocket delivered a sacrifice flyout to right field, plating what proved to be the winning run.
Freshman Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio) earned the save, striking out one batter with a groundout and pop out.
The Zips and the Boilermakers will be back in action with doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 4.
