Akron Visits Texas for Pair of Weekend Meets

BOBCAT INVITATIONAL: MEET INFORMATION | LIVE STATS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team travels to Texas for a pair of weekend meets as the Zips are slated to compete at the Texas Relays hosted by Texas and the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State.
TEXAS RELAYS: The 95th annual Texas Relays will draw athletes among the high school, collegiate and professional ranks from around the country and the world for its annual meet this week.
The men's decathlon and women's heptathlon will be contested on Wednesday and Thursday, March 29-30. The women's heptathlon commences the Texas Relays at 11:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday, while the men's decathlon begins at 12 p.m. ET.
Field events kick off with the women's hammer on Thursday at 12 p.m. ET, with running events getting underway with the women's 400-meter hurdles at 5:30 p.m. ET. The women's 4x100 relays start competition on Friday at 10:35 a.m. ET with the distance medley relay rounding out the day at 7:05 p.m. ET. The finals of the 4x400 relays will conclude the Texas Relays on Saturday, April 1, starting at 5:05 p.m. ET.

BOBCAT INVITATIONAL: Akron will also participate in the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Texas State beginning on Thursday and running through Saturday, March 30-April 1, in San Marcos, Texas.
The women's discus will commence competition in the field on Thursday at 10 a.m. ET. Second-day competition commences with the women's shot put at 11 a.m. ET on Friday, before the men's 5,000 meters caps the day's action at 9:05 p.m. ET. Saturday kicks off with the men's high jump at 11 a.m. ET and the men's 4x100 relay at 7:45 p.m. ET.

A WEEK AGO: Led by a school-record time of 28:45.78 in the men's 10,000 meters from Brian Masai, the University of Akron men's and women's track and field team garnered four personal-best times to highlight the Zips' efforts in the 800 meters at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State on March 24-25.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 indoor season as the Zips rated in the Event Squad rankings released on Feb. 27, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked 14th nationally in the men's pole vault and in the men's weight throw.
Outdoor rankings will be released on Monday, April 3.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2023 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron has a pair of student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2023 outdoor campaign, including, freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya), who is 10th in the men's 10,000 meters (28:45.78).
Also rated among the top-50 sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain), who is 19th in the nation in the men's pole vault (17-0.75/5.20m).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Akron Redshirt sophomore pole vaulter Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation on March 11. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered Second-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a 12th-place showing (18-1/5.51m) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico on March 10.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips have posted one school record from Brian Masai in the men's 10,000 meters as part of one overall top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2023 outdoor campaign.
