Kent State Rallies Past Akron to Win Series Finale

AKRON, Ohio – A pair of runs in its final at-bat lifted Kent State to a come-from-behind 4-3 triumph past The University of Akron softball team in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
By virtue of the victory, the Golden Flashes captured the full point in the season series in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
"We absolutely let one get away today," Akron head coach Craig Nicholson commented. "We didn't make many mistakes, we just made them at bad times and our inability to add on after going up 3-0 caught up to us today."
Leading 3-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Zips surrendered a lead-off home run to tie the game before the Golden Flashes loaded the bases and scored the winning tally on a steal of home.
Akron got a lead-off single in the bottom of the frame, but were unable get the big hit to square the game as Kent State secured the series win.
The Zips garnered their offensive production in the affair with four two-out base hits in the bottom of the second inning.
Junior Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) doubled to right center before coming across on a single to right field by freshman Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.) to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
Following a single down the right field line by redshirt Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) on which she advanced to second base on the throw, junior Madison Dudek (Uniontown, Ohio) delivered a two-RBI single to right center to extend the Zips' margin to 3-0.
Akron was unable to stretch its lead the remainder of the contest as the Zips left runners on base in each of the final five innings.
Redshirt junior Molly McChesney (Verona, Wis.) and freshman Meagan Lee (Leander, Texas) each collected a pair of hits for Akron, while freshman P Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) worked 6.0 innings and struck out six in the circle for the Zips.
