Zips Claim Game One at Toledo

Toledo, Ohio – The Akron baseball team received a pair of strong pitching performances and timely hitting en route to a 2-1 win over Toledo at Scott Park Baseball Complex on Friday.
Akron junior starting pitcher Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the game one win. Tortorella faced 31 batters in 7.1 innings of work, allowing five hits and no earned runs as one Rocket crossed the plate. He collected nine strikeouts and walked one.
Freshman pitcher Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio) hurled the final 1.2 innings in relief and denied Toledo (9-11,3-4 MAC) a chance at a comeback. Gillies allowed one hit with two strike outs and no walks for the save.
Akron (9-11,4-3 MAC) scattered seven hits, highlighted by a pair of RBI doubles from junior OF Jack Poist (Hoover, Ala.) and sophomore OF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio). Poist doubled down the left field line in the fourth inning to push the Zips' first run across the plate. Seeker scored the run and used the right field line for an RBI double in the sixth inning to give Akron a 2-0 advantage. Seeker finished the game with a 2-of-3 performance at the plate with a walk.
Junior OF Jack Firestone (Zionsville, Ind.) also registered two hits in four at-bats and scored the Zips second run of the game.
