Akron Baseball Heads to Toledo for Weekend #MACtion Series

What's Ahead
The Akron baseball team travels to Scott Park Baseball Complex to battle the Toledo Rockets in a three-game series on Friday through Sunday, March 24-26. The #MACtion series is slated for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Friday followed by a pair of 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and and Sunday. All times are subject to change. The  Akron Zips
The Zips have won three of the last four games, including a big midweek victory over the Michigan Wolverines (11-10). Akron swept the first two games of the Bowling Green series last weekend (5-4 and 3-1), but couldn't hold on for the win in the series finale (5-4). Akron is 8-11 on the season and 3-3 in Mid-American Conference play. In addition, starting pitcher Spencer Atkins was named MAC Pitcher of the Week for a complete game 3-1 winning performance. Atkins limited the Falcons to just three hits and threw six no-hit innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

Sophomore OF Ian Pennington leads the Zips offense with an .311 batting average with a team-best 23 hits, including six doubles, two homeruns and a triple. He is second on the squad with 13 RBI, as junior Jack Firestone leads the way with 16 RBI. Firestone is batting .268 with a second-best 19 hits while leading the team with nine homeruns. He is coming off a 2-for-3 performance with a two-run dinger and a grandslam. Sophomore Sam Seeker is also batting .268 with 19 hits with seven double, two bombs and a triple. Sammy Tortorella paces the pitching staff with a 4.34 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. In 29.0 innings pitched, he allowed 26 hits and 10 walks while collecting 22 strikeouts.

Scouting Toledo
The Rockets enter the series with a 9-10 overall record and 3-3 league mark, dropping their midweek game to Ohio State 6-4. Toledo has lost five straight games, including three to Ball State (14-2, 19-16 (13 inn.) and 7-4) after sweeping three games against Miami (5-2, 6-2 and 7-3). The Rockets have four players batting .300 or better, led by Jeron Williams with a .368 batting average. Williams owns a team-best 32 hits with five doubles, three homeruns and a triple for 20 runs scored and 16 RBI. Brayden White follows with a .362 average, issuing 17 hits  with three doubles and seven RBI. Also collecting 20+ hits are Garret Pike (28), Owen Jackson (24), Daunte DeCello (22) and Mason Sykes (21). Pike and Jackson are batting .346 and .316, respectively, while Pike leads the team in RBI (24) and Jackson paces the squad with nine homeruns. Noah Johnson leads the team in innings pitched with 25.2 and a 3.16 ERA. He owns a team-high 31 strikeouts and limits the opponents to a .271 batting average.
