Raleigh Relays Up Next for Akron Track and Field Squad

RALEIGH RELAYS: MEET INFORMATION | MEET SCHEDULE | LIVE STATS
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team is sending a contingent of runners to Raleigh, N.C., to compete at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State this Friday through Saturday, March 24-25.
UP NEXT: The Zips will compete at three-day event at the Paul Derr Track and Field Facility this weekend.
The meet will kick off with the men's javelin beginning at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday before action on the track gets underway with the men's 1,500 meters at 4:30 p.m. The women's discus opens competition on Friday at 9:45 a.m. before the women's 100-meter hurdles starts running events at 12:50 p.m. The meet concludes with the men's 4x400 relay at 5:35 p.m. on Saturday.
Scheduled to compete for Akron are freshman Brian Masai (Kitale, Kenya) in the men's 10,000 meters at 10:35 p.m. on Friday. Redshirt sophomore Maddie Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) and redshirt junior Makenna Heimlich (Shelby, Ohio) are slated to participate in the women's 800 meters at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday before senior Marc Carrera (Staten Island, N.Y.), sophomore Jean Dieuvil (North Miami Beach, Fla.), freshman Zayd Elkurd (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio) and redshirt senior Oliver Huffman (Augusta, Ga.) race in the in the men's 800 meters at 4:20 p.m.

PRIETO GARNERS WEEKLY LEAGUE ACCOLADES: Akron track and field sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) was recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, March 22.
The Zips picked up weekly conference accolades for the fourth time in 2023, while Prieto was recognized by the league for the initial time this season.
Prieto battled the elements to capture the men's pole vault with a career-best outdoor mark of 17-075 (5.20m) at the Stan Romanoski Open on Saturday, March 18. His effort is a league-leading mark and stands as the No. 7 overall performance in the NCAA this spring and third-best in NCAA East Region.
A WEEK AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field team garnered six victories as part of 13 overall top-three performances at the Stan Romanoski Open hosted by West Virginia on March 17-18.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2023 indoor season as the Zips rated in the Event Squad rankings released on Feb. 27, 2023, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked 14th nationally in the men's pole vault and in the men's weight throw.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2023 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron have a pair of student-athletes ranked in the top-50 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2023 outdoor campaign, including, Oscar Prieto, who is seventh in the nation in the men's pole vault (17-0.75/5.20m).
Also rated among the top-50 is redshirt junior Robert Artrip (Independence, Ohio), who is 41st in the men's pole vault (16-0.75/4.90m).
GARRETSON NAMED ELITE 90 WINNER: Akron Redshirt sophomore pole vaulter Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) was the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2023 NCAA Division Men's Track and Field Indoor Championship.
Garretson, majoring in mathematics, boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA was presented with the award during the presentation on March 11. He became the second Zip to earn the distinguished honor joining Tyler Sanda, who won the award as a member of the Akron men's soccer team in 2015.
GARRETSON GARNERS ALL-AMERICA ACCOLADES: Hunter Garretson garnered Second-Team All-America accolades on the strength of a 12th-place showing (18-1/5.51m) at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of New Mexico on March 10.
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted one school record as part of seven overall top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2023 indoor campaign.
