ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The 14th-ranked University of Akron rifle team registered a pair of season-best performances to highlight the Zips' efforts versus No. 5 Kentucky and fourth-rated and defending NCAA Champion Alaska Fairbanks this Saturday (Nov. 18) and Sunday (Nov. 19).
Â
Akron posted a then season-best score of 4712, the second-highest mark in program history and only nine points away from defeating the Wildcats.
Â
Senior Erin Schnupp (Gorham, Maine) led the Zips in the smallbore with a match-high 588 score, while senior Gavin Perkowski (Bolivar, Ohio) recorded a mark of 597 to headline Akron in the air rifle.
Â
In the weekend finale versus Alaska Fairbanks and Kentucky, Akron tallied a season-high score of 4716, which was one point away from equaling the team single-match record.
Â
Sophomore Natalia Siek (Flemington, N.J.) posted a 594 score in the air rifle before sophomore Andrew Duross (Marlborough, Mass.) pounded 10 after 10 resulting in a new school record of 598-50. The record was short-lived as Perkowski buried his rifle in the center and kept pounding 10's and revealed yet another 598 with two more center shots making the second school record in four hours at 598-52.
Â
Akron returns to competition on Jan. 20 as the Zips host Morehead State and Ole Miss.
