Akron Hosts Rival Kent State in Annual Dual Meet

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams continue their 2023 indoor campaign this weekend as the Zips host rival Kent State in a dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20 at the Stile Athletics Field House.
The 28-event meet with the Golden Flashes will commence with the men's high jump, long jump and weight throw as well as the women's pole vault beginning at 4 p.m., before the men's mile kicks off action on the track at 5 p.m.
The event will be scored as a dual meet with 5-3-2-1 points being awarded for individual events with two scores per team, while relays will be scored with the winner being awarded five points and the runner-up three points.

DIGITAL TICKETING
Mobile tickets are available for $10 at www.GoZips.com/tickets and must be purchased in advance. Mobile ticketing will be utilized for all home Akron track and field meets this season. Akron students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge. All fans should enter through the Akron student recreation center main entrance. Doors will open to the public at 3:00 p.m.

GARRETSON NAMED MAC FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: University of Akron track and field sophomore Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) was honored by the Mid-American Conference as its Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
The Zips picked up weekly conference accolades for the initial time in 2023, while Garretson was recognized by the league for the first time this season.
Garretson continued his stellar run of performances winning the men's pole vault at the Akron Quad on Jan. 13 eclipsing 17-2.75 (5.25m), the 19th-best mark in the NCAA this season. His effort also stands as the top-rated effort in the MAC this spring.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2022 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 1, 2022, as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.
Akron ranked 12th nationally in the men's triple jump as well as rating among the top 20 in five different events.
The Zips also rated 14th in the women's pole vault, 15th in the men's 400 meters, 20th in the men's long jump and weight throw.
The Akron men and women ranked eighth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.
ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2023 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron have a pair of student-athletes ranked in the top-30 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2023 indoor campaign, including, Hunter Garretson, who is 19th in the nation in the men's pole vault (17-2.75/5.25m).
Also rated among the top-30 is sophomore Oscar Prieto (Barcelona, Spain) 30th in the men's pole vault – 16-10.75/5.15m).
CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips added 24 top-five performances in program history to the record book during the 2022 indoor campaign, including five school records.
ZIPS RETURN NINE ALL-MAC PERFORMERS: The Zips return nine all-conference indoor performers from a season ago.

A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams garnered a pair of dual-meet victories over rival Kent State on Jan. 21 at the Kent State Fieldhouse as the Zips posted 18 triumphs en route to registering 40 overall top-three performances.
Akron edged Kent State in the men's meet by a score of 78-66, while the Zips bettered the Golden Flashes in the women's competition, 76-74. The results will set the stage for when Kent State hosts the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25, when the two teams will vie for the league title in the men's and women's competitions as well as a pair of points in the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
