Zips Garner First Win of the Season; Splits on Final Day of Seton Hall Invite

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- The Akron volleyball team won its first game of the season with a 3-1 victory over George Mason in the final game of the Seton Hall Invite. Earlier in the day, the Zips fell to hosts Seton Hall, 3-1.

The Zips had four players have double-figure kills with senior Teagan Ochaya (Mentor, Ohio) leading the way with 16 kills. Junior Faith Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) ended with 13 kills, while Karleighana Jones and Chloe Werner each added 10 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Akron took the first set with a 26-24 score. The Zips ended with a .217 hitting percentage while limiting Seton Hall to a .184. Back-to-back kills by Johnson and Ochaya sealed the set victory.
- Seton Hall took the second set out-hitting the Zips, .484- .132 and had no errors in the second set. Seton Hall's above the net defense blocked four shots, while the Zips couldn't block an attack.
- Despite a furious late rally by Akron, Seton Hall was able to hold off the Zips for a 25-23 set three victory. Johnson led the Zips' efforts with five kills and a block.
- After trailing much of the final set, Seton Hall was able to take a 19-17 lead. Akron was able to re-gain a 22-20 lead, but a 5-0 run by Seton Hall secured the fourth set and match victory.

Ochaya led the Zips with 15 kills on a .324 hitting percentage, while Johnson added 12 kills. Above the net, Ellen Kinnaird led with a match-high eight blocks, while Ochaya added five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Akron game out swinging and took the first set, 25-18. Johnson led the offensive efforts with six of the Zips' 14 kills. The Zips' defense used eight blocks and capitalized on four Geroge Mason errors.
-George Mason took the second set, 25-21 after out-hitting the Zips, .226-.100. It was a tight game statistically, as the set saw three ties and two lead changes.
- The third set was a close one and another hard-fought set with eight ties and five lead changes, but the Zips came out on top and took the set victory, 27-25. Jones and Kinnaird led the Zips with four kills each.
- Akron dominated the fourth set out-hitting George Mason, .250-.000. The Zips had three total team blocks and two service aces that lifted the Zips past George Mason, 25-16 for the match win. Ochaya finished the final set with six kills.

Akron will return home from Sept. 8-10 for the Akron Invite. The Zips will open with Cleveland State on Thursday, Sept. 8 for a 6 p.m. match. On Friday, Sept. 9, Akron will face Valparaiso at 6 p.m., before closing out the Invite on Sat. Sept. 10 to face Morgan State at noon. All games will be played at James A. Rhodes Arena.
