Zips Defeat Cleveland State in Home Debut at The JAR and Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips volleyball team opened the Akron Invitational with a 3-2 (25-17, 25-20, 16-25, 15-25, 15-13) win over Cleveland State in the first home game of the season at James A. Rhodes Arena on Thursday evening.
The Zips the five-set thriller behind four double-digit kill performances as Teagan Ochaya led the way with 12 kills. Karleighana Jones and Ellen Kinnaird followed with 11 kills each, while Faith Johnson added 10 kills. Jones posted a .526 hitting percentage on 19 attempts with only one error. Avery Brown and Baylee Vought split the assists duties with 21 and 18, respectively, and Mia Thompson and Johnson anchored the defense with 40 and 28 digs.
How it Happened
• Akron opened first home match with a 25-17 first set win as Ochaya led with five kills and a .357 hitting percentage. The team posted a match-high .333 team hitting percentage and had three of their nine total blocks.
• Akron took a 2-0 set advantage with a 25-20 win in the second set paced by two kills each by Jones, Kinnaird and Chloe Werner.
• Cleveland State claimed sets three and four by scores of 25-16 and 25-15
• Akron bounced back with a fifth set win. The back and forth battle was tied 13-13 before Kinnaird floored the 14th point with a kill and a CSU hitting error ended the match 15-13. Johnson led with three kills, while Kinnaird and Jones pounded out two each.
