Johnson Leads Zips in Second Match of Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – Junior outside hitter Faith Johnson led the Akron volleyball team in a 3-1 setback to Valparaiso in the second game of the Akron Invitational on Friday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Zips won the opening set 25-21 as Johnson floored a team-high five kills en route to a match-high 19 kills with a .405 hitting percentage. The Beacons won the following three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 28-26. Johnson pounded out two kills in the second set, three in the third and a team-high nine kills in the fourth frame. Teammates, Teagan Ochaya and Karleighana Jones followed with 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Baylee Vought tossed a team-best 24 assists and Avery Brown recorded 19 assists. Defensively, Akron was paced by Lauren Latka with 20 digs, while Ochaya and Vought added 12 and 11.
How it Happened
• Akron pulled away after a tied score at 18-18 with back-to-back kills from Ochaya and a kill from Jones for a 21-18 advantage. The Zips closed out the set, winning four of the next seven points.
• Valparaiso used an 8-0 run to take a 16-8 lead and held on for the set two win.
• Again the Beacons held a 16-8 advantage in the third set to claim a 2-1 set advantage after three sets.
• The final set was back and forth and needed extra points to close out the match.
