AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's soccer team opens its Mid-American Conference slate traveling to Buffalo, N.Y., for a 7 p.m. showdown with Buffalo on Thursday, Sept. 22, before hosting rival Kent State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

SCOUTING AKRON
The Zips enters action on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 1-2-2 on the campaign following a 2-0 setback at Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 11.
Freshman Emma King (Akron, Ohio) leads Akron with team-high marks in goals (2), points (4), shots (8) and shots on goal (5). Sophomore GK's Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) and Maxima Carlitz (Stolberg, Germany) have combined to register 23 saves en route to posting a 1.40 goals against average.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Jen Simonetti, the Zips return 16 players from last season's squad, including eight players who started 10 or more games. Akron is led by sophomore Katie Stafford (Gahanna, Ohio) who paced the team with four goals, an assist, and six shots on goal last season, while sophomore Sarah Nguyen (Irwin, Pa.) led the team with four assists and eight shots on goal. In the net, the Zips return Cuirinier, who made 18 starts in goal and registered 94 saves.
The Zips welcome three true freshmen to the squad in Ari Mahoney (Medina, Ohio), King, and Kristina Syragakis (Quebec, Canada), while also adding three transfers in Clara Krohn (Akron, Ohio), Merica Abnathy (Lakeland, Fla.), and Lacey Bernick (Huntingdon, Pa.).

Buffalo enters action on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 6-1-0 on the campaign following a 2-0 victory over Yale on Sunday, Sept. 18. The Bulls have posted clean sheets in their last four games and have surrendered only four goals all season.
Sophomore Jasmine Guerber leads Buffalo with team-high marks in goals (5), points (11), shots (18), shots on goal (10) and game-winners (3). Redshirt senior GK Emily Kelly has pulled in 17 saves en route to posting a 0.57 goals against average.
As a team, the Bulls are ranked 13th in the NCAA in assists per game (2.86), 14th in winning percentage (.857), 32nd in goals against average (.571) and total assists (20), 37th in shutout percentage (.571), 40th in points per outing (7.14) and 41st in shots on goal (8.00).
SCOUTING KENT STATE
Kent State comes into play against Ohio on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 0-5-2 on the campaign following a 2-1 setback at Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Golden Flashes have been shutout in five of their first seven games this year and have been limited to only two goals offensively.
Juniors Callie Cunningham and Dalaney Ranallo have accounted for Kent State's goals this season with Cunningham pacing the squad in points (2) and shots (5), while redshirt senior Tianna Harris leads the team in shots on goal (5). Senior GK Sarah Melen has pulled in 29 saves en route to posting a 1.63 goals against average.
SERIES HISTORY
Akron and Buffalo are meeting for the 23rd time in program history with the Bulls owning a 10-9-3 series advantage. A year ago, Buffalo registered a 1-0 victory over the Zips on Oct. 28, 2021, in Buffalo, N.Y.
