Zips Split with Western Michigan in Series Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Â The Akron softball team (13-23, 8-7 MAC) split its double header with Western Michigan in the series opener on Friday with a 6-0 loss and a 1-0 win.

GM 1: Akron 0, WMU 6
The Broncos got on the board first after taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Akron had a chance to put a run on in the second, but ended the inning with one runner stranded.
WMU plated a solo run in the third inning putting the Broncos up, 4-0. In the bottom of the sixth, WMU extended its lead to 6-0 and secured the 6-0 victory.
Akron was led by Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) who had two hits on three at bats. In the circle, Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) suffered the loss after going 2.1 innings giving up four runs on five hits.
GM 2: Akron 1, WMU 0
The second game was scoreless through seven innings forcing to go to extra. In the eighth inning the Zips had runners on second and third. Â Molly McChesney (Verona, Wisc.) reached first on a dropped third strike, advancing to second base on the throw, allowing the game winning run to score.
Western Michigan tried to answer, but flied out and ended the inning with back-to-back ground outs as the Zips held on for the 1-0 victory.
Olivia Otani (Canton, Ohio) gets the win after going 8.0 innings giving up no runs and only two hits, while fanning two batters.
Akron will close out the series on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m.
