BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The University of Akron women's lacrosse team garnered a pair of multi-goal efforts from junior Alexis Kiefer (West Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Izzy Szejk (Camp Hill, Pa.), but the Zips (1-2) were unable to overcome Gardner-Webb (2-1) in a 17-7 setback on Sunday, Feb. 20.

"This weekend has given us many experiences that are adding to our great foundation," Akron head coach Christy Mitchell commented. "We are proud of the team dynamic, and we have started putting a lot of great things together."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Szejk opened the scoring in the contest delivering her first of two goals on the afternoon at the 11:09 mark of an assist from junior Sarah Pattison (Cincinnati, Ohio).
• Kiefer extended the Zips' lead to 2-0 connecting on a free position shot with 9:09 left in the opening quarter.
• Gardner-Webb responded with six unanswered tallies to assume a 6-2 advantage in the second quarter before sophomore Chloe Hererra (Houston, Texas) found the back of the net on a free position goal with 6:58 remaining in the initial half
• Kiefer scored her second goal of the afternoon courtesy of an assist from sophomore Noelle Boyd (Murrysville, Pa.) at the 4:37 mark to cut Akron's deficit to 6-4.
• Each side found the back of the net over the final four minutes of the half, including a man-up tally from junior Kaija Kunttu (Zionsville, Ind.) off a pass from freshman Kylie Harris (Lake Norman, N.C.), to send the Bulldogs into the intermission holding a 7-5 lead.
• Gardner-Webb netted five of the first six goals in the second half to extend its margin with Boyd accounting for the Zips' tally scoring her second goal of the season at the 13:16 mark.
• Szejk recorded her second tally of the match with 3:22 left in the third quarter to cap Akron's scoring on the afternoon in a 17-7 setback.
• Sophomore GK Ashley Lapp (Missouri City, Texas) tallied 10 saves in net in the match for the Zips.
• Akron was led by four shots apiece from Kiefer and Szejk.

Akron returns home to battle rival Kent State in a 4 p.m. tilt on Wednesday, Feb. 23, at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field in the opening leg of two showdowns on the year between the Zips and Golden Flashes as part of the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge.
