AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swim and dive team won three of seven events and received serval fast performances throughout the third day of the 2022 Zippy Invitational at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Saturday.

Junior Madelyn Gatrall backed-up her record-breaking performance from a day ago, clocking a 51.85 time in the 100-yard backstroke. Gatrall won the gold and her time was just 0.01 away from the swim that set the Mid-American Conference and Akron program records (51.84). Senior Weronika Gorecka also had a fast time of 53.17 for the silver and a NCAA B-Cut qualifying time.

Sophomore Abigail Daniel registered Akron's first gold medal of the day, winning the 100-yard butterfly with a lifetime best and b-cut time of 52.56 – Her previous best time was 52.92. Junior Rachel Sabotin also registered a personal best time en route to the bronze with a 53.86, replacing her 54.68.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team secured the third win in the final event of the evening as Daniel (22.85), Gatrall (22.34), senior Rachel Schiffli (22.43) and senior Olivia DeRodes (22.61) stopped the timer at 1:30.23.

The Zips received runner-up performances from senior Andrea Fischer, junior Astrid Halvorsen and Paige Kalik. Fischer claimed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:01.24 b-cut time, while junior Madeline Dyer was on her heels for the bronze medal. Dyer posted a b-cut 1:01.37.

Halvorsen captured silver in the 400-yard individual medley with a 4:21.60 time, just 0.26 faster than sophomore teammate Kendall Craig 4:21.86 bronze-medal finish.

Kalik turned in the final silver medal performance in the 3-meter diving event. She collected 304.10 points while addind 28 points to the Zips total.

The Zips own an 83-point lead over the field with 1,323 total points after 27 events, followed by Buffalo (1,240), Pennsylvania (1,062.5), Oakland (865.5), Cornell (791), Keiser (391) and Clarion (362).

On the men's side, two more records fell with Pennsylvania's Benjamin Feldman setting a new meet and pool record in the 100-yard butterfly with a NCAA B-Cut time of 46.79, replacing the previous marks owned by Lago Moussalem (pool, 2018, Miami, 47.26) and Alberto Garcia (meet, 2021, Keiser, 47.59). In addition, the top three finishers posted faster times than the old record as Garcia (Keiser) surpassed his time from last season with a 47.11 for silver and Andrew Dai (Penn) clocked a 47.47 for bronze. The second record that fell was in the 200-yard freestyle as Samuel McKenzie logged a 1:35.70 time, surpassing the meet and pool record he set last year of 1:36.07.

The final day of the Zippy Invitational is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 4 with prelims slated for a 9 a.m. start and finals at 4 p.m.
