Akron, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team won 4-of-6 events on the final day of competition to be crowned 2022 Zippy Invitational Champions at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Sunday.

The Zips finished with a 188-point advantage over the field, scoring 1,835 total points after 42 events, followed by Buffalo (1,647), Pennsylvania (1,511.5), Oakland (1,291.5), Cornell (1,137), Keiser (578) and Clarion (446).

Akron opened the final evening of competition with a fourth-place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle as Gail Workman clocked a 16:59.18 time.

Junior Madelyn Gatrall secured the Akron's first victory in the 200-yard backstroke with a 1:53.50 ledger and senior Weronika Gorecka finished second overall with a 1:53.57 time. Senior Rachel Schiffli added a silver medal performance in the 100-yard freestyle as she stopped the timer at 50.09.

Akron won the final three events of the night as senior Andrea Fischer posted a 2:11.80 time in the 200-yard breast stroke. Abigail Daniel followed with a gold medal performance in the 200-yard butterfly with a NCAA B-Cut 1:58.16 time.

The evening ended with the 400-yard freestyle relay squad topping the podium with a 3:18.16 time, which was two seconds faster than the runner-up (3:20.80). Gatrall (49.33) started the race with the fastest split of 49.33 while Schiffli followed with a 49.46 time. Sophomore Rebecca Reid added a 49.72 split as Gorecka closed out the event with a 49.65 time.

Penn claimed the men's championships with 2,095.5 points followed by Cornell (1,879.5), Oakland (1,536), Keiser (1,413) and Clarion (764).

Three meet and pool records fell on the final day of competition as Keiser's Aaron Wilmes swam 15:13.49 in the 1650-yard freestyle, achieving the meet and pool record set in 2021 by Cornell's Billy Fallon (15:22.72). Penn's Andrew Dai claimed the 200-yard butterfly meet and pool standard with a NCAA B-Cut 1:45.95 time, replacing Cornell's Joseph Gurski's time of 1:46.99 in 2021. Penn also had a swimmer, Benjamin Feldman, match a meet and pool record with a 43.66 performance in the 100-yard freestyle. Oakland's 400-yard freestyle relay ended the Zippy Invitational in record-breaking fashion, setting the new meet and pool standard at 2:55.49 to replace the records they posted last season (2:56.58).

The Zips are scheduled to be back in action on January 14, 2023 as the swim team will battle Bowling Green in a dual meet. The diving squad will compete at the Buffalo Diving invite on  January 13-15.
