Akron Swimming and Diving Goes Separate Ways to Open New Year

What's Ahead
The Akron Zips swimming and diving team each have their own events this weekend divers compete at the UB Diving Invite hosted by Buffalo at the Alumni Arena Natatorium on Friday-Sunday, Jan. 13-15, while the swimmers travel to Bowling Green for a dual meet at Cooper Pool on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m.

UB Diving Invite
All three days of the UB Diving invite are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. as the 1-meter diving kicks off the three-day event as Friday's competition. On Saturday, the eight-team women's field features the 3-meter diving events followed by Sunday's platform competition. Participating programs include Buffalo (host), Akron, Bowling Green, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan, Ohio, St. Bonaventure, and Toledo.

Scouting The Falcons
Bowling Green is 4-1 in dual meet action this season, defeating Butler (192-70), Ball State (174.5-124.5) and Marshall twice (175.5-122.5 and 165-135). The Falcons fell to Toledo (140.5-159.5). The last time BGSU and Akron met was in the 2018-19 season when the Zips posted a 140-100 victory.

About the Zips
Akron is 2-1 overall in dual meets with wins against MAC foes Buffalo (165-134) and Ball State (159-138) and falling to Ohio State (71-224). In addition, the Zips won three invites including the Akron Zips Classic, Magnus Cup Invitational, and the Zippy Invitational. Junior Madelyn Gatrall was named Mid-American Conference women's swimmer of the week after a phenomenal showing at the 2022 Zippy Invitational. During the four-day meet, Gatrall won eight events including three individual events and five relays while achieving two NCAA B-Cut times and setting a new Mid-American Conference record.
