Akron Wins 2022 Magnus Cup Invitational Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team captured their sixth Magnus Cup Invitational championship, including back-to-back title in 2021 and 2022, posting five wins coupled with nine second and third place performances en route to 1,532.5 total points at Busbey Natatorium on Saturday.
Akron opened the final day of competition with a silver medal performance in the 1650-yard freestyle by Gail Workman (17:01.74), while junior Madelyn Gatrall recorded the first win of the day and her eighth gold medal of the weekend. Gatrall secured Akron's first gold on Saturday with a 1:56.67 triumph in the 200-yard backstroke – senior Weronika Gorecka placed second (1:58.39). Gatrall added a ninth gold medal and Akron's second win of the day with a 50.03 showing in the 100-yard freestyle – Abigail Daniel touched second with a 50.51 time.
The Zips swept the top three spots of 200-yard breaststroke as senior Andera Fischer stopped the timer first at 2:15.26 followed by Madeline Dyer (2:16.08) and Giovanna Cappabianca (2:16.41). Akron posted silver and bronze finishes in the 200-yard butterfly as Daniel and senior Rachel Sabotin placed second and third with 1:59.28 and 2:00.84 times respectively.
Gatrall found her way back on top of the podium for a 10th time with the 400-yard freestyle relay team. The squad of Gatrall (50.13), Gorecka (50.27), senior Julia Mauter (51.05) and Daniel (49.93) cruised to victory by nearly two seconds, posting a 3:21.38 time. Rebecca Reid (51.27), Astrid Halvorsen (50.73), Rachel Schiffli (51.76) and Olivia Derodes (51.32) secured the bronze with a 3:25.08 ledger.
The Akron divers added two medals to the final day count as sophomores Laurel Smith and McKenzie Dunigan delivered career-best performances from the platform to finish first and second, respectively. Senior Paige Kalik won the 1-meter and 3-meter events with NCAA Zone qualifying scores, while Smith and Dunigan followed second and third in both events. Smith also qualified for NCAA Diving Zones in the 1-meter diving event.
For the meet, Akron captured 18 of 21 gold medals, while Gatrall accounted for 10 of them. The Zips finished second 11 times and claimed 10 bronze medals.
Akron will be back in action for the Zippy Invitational on Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 1-4 at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium. Fans can follow the action live via Zips Digital Network on GoZips.com.
