Akron Wins Both Women’s Events in Opening Night of the 2022 Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron swimming and diving team opened the 2022 Zippy Invitational with a pair of wins and 230 points for an early lead over the seven-team field at Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium on Thursday.
The 200-yard medley relay team of junior Madelyn Gatrall (24.42), senior Andrea Fischer (27.67), senior Weronika Gorecka (23.59) and sophomore Abigail Daniel (22.14) flew to a 1:37.82 time and started the meet with a convincing win over Mid-American Conference rival Buffalo (1:39.61). Their time was just two-tenths of second from the meet record. Sophomore Rebecca Reid (25.60), junior Madeline Dyer (27.68), junior Rachel Sabotin (24.72) and senior Rachel Schiffli (22.44) placed third overall with a 1:39.91 time.
Akron won the second women's relay of the night as Gorecka (1:48.45), Gatrall (1:47.35), Daniel (1:50.12) and junior Astrid Halvorsen (1:49.75) posted a 7:15.67 time in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Halvorsen finished strong for the win against Pennsylvania's Catherine Buroker as UPenn finished second overall (7:16.34).
On the men's side, Pennsylvania won both the 200 MR and 800 Free in record-breaking fashion. The Quakers posted a 1:26.38 time in the 200 MR to replace the meet and pool record set in 2016 by Cornell (1:26.44). The 800 Free team reset the standard set in the 2021 meet by Penn (6:32.47) by four seconds, finishing with a new meet and pool record of 6:28.24.
After the opening four events to the Zippy Invitational, Akron held time trails as juniors Giovanna Cappabianca and Rachel Sabotin competed in the 100-yard individual medley and posted automatic qualifying times for the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. Cappabianca flew to a 56.89 time and Sabotin stopped the timer at 56.90, both surpassing the qualifying time of 58.49.
In the 200-yard backstroke time trial, Oakland's Susan LaGrand achieved a NCAA DI B-Cut time of 1:53.37. In addition, her 200 Back time was under the invited time for the 2022 NCAA Championships.
The Zippy Invitational will resume on Friday, Dec. 2 with prelims scheduled for a 9 a.m. start and finals slated for 6 p.m.
