AKRON, Ohio – Junior Madelyn Gatrall registered a record-breaking performance as the leadoff of the 400-yard medley relay team, snapping the Mid-American Conference and program 100-yard backstroke standard (51.84) en route to a pair of gold medal performances as Akron leads the 2022 Zippy Invitational.

Gatrall replaced the 52.10 record set by Sadie Fazekas in 2019 at the MAC Championships hosted at Akron. Gatrall's 51.84 time stands as the Zippy Invitational record, replacing Madison Myers time of 52.82 in 2017. The 400-yard medley relay team won gold as junior Madeline Dyer (1:01.64), sophomore Abigail Daniel (52.84) and senior Rachel Schiffli (49.52) posted a 3:35.48 time.

Gatrall won Akron's second gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle with a NCAA B-Cut time of 22.52, while Daniel also achieved a b-cut time with a bronze performance of 22.62. Schiffli finished fourth at 22.94. Oakland's Susan LaGrand won the race with a 1:57.33 b-cut time to set the meet record that was previously held by Akron's Sarah Watson (1:57.67).

Senior Paige Kalik started the scoring for the Zips as she paced the Akron diving squad and finished second overall on the 1-meter boards. Kalik registered 285.15 points for the silver and posted a NCAA DI Zones qualifying score. In addition, sophomore Laurel Smith (232.45) and freshman Elizabeth Noble (222.05) followed on the 1-meter boards and added 20 and 16 points to the Zips total. Â

Akron also received strong performances in the 200-yard individual medley, claiming the four of the six top spots. Daniel led the way with a second-place finish and a b-cut time of 1:59.32, while junior Rachel Sabotin claimed bronze with a 2:00.52 ledger. Senior Weronika Gorecka (2:01.79) and sophomore Rebecca Reid (2:01.92) touched fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Zips own a commanding 157.5-point lead over the field with 746 total points after two days of competition, followed by Pennsylvania (588.5), Buffalo (577), Oakland (473.5), Cornell (422), Clarion (236) and Keiser (217).

On the men's side, two records fell as Penn's Matthew Fallon had a hand in both. Fallon posted a 1:43. 63 NCAA B-Cut time in the 200-yard individual medley to set the meet and pool standard, replacing his own performance from a year ago (1:44.03). He was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay squad that registered a 3:09.40 time, replacing Penn's 3:10.43 record set in 2021.

The Zippy Invitational will resume on Saturday, Dec. 3 with prelims scheduled for a 9 a.m. start and finals slated for 6 p.m.
