Zips Commence Indoor Campaign Hosting Akron Quad

AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams open their 2022 indoor campaigns this Friday as the Zips welcome Buffalo, Eastern Michigan and Youngstown State to the Stiles Athletic Field House for a quad meet on Friday, Jan. 14.

The 28-event meet will kick off with the women's pole vault at 6 p.m. The 16-event running competition commences with the men's mile at 7:15 p.m. before the women's 4x400 relay closes action at 9:25 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door for $10 (cash only). Akron students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge. All fans should enter through the Akron student recreation center main entrance. Doors will open to the public at 5:30 p.m.
Regardless of vaccination status, spectators and guests at Akron Track and Field meets at the Stile Athletics Field House must wear mask that fully covers the nose and mouth at all indoor spaces including lobbies, elevators, restrooms, hallways, stairways and at their seats unless eating or drinking.
The meet will be scored as a quad meet: 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (Individual Events, 2 score per team) 9-7-6-5 (Relay Events, 1 score per team).

NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Akron track and field teams garnered recognition for their efforts during the 2021 indoor season as the Zips were rated in the Event Squad rankings released on March 1, 2021 as part of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field National Rating Index.

Akron ranked fifth nationally in the men's triple jump and among the top 20 in six different events.

The Zips also rated seventh in the men's long jump, ninth in the men's pole vault, 11th in the men's weight throw, 14th in the women's long jump and 19th in the women's 800 meters.

The Akron men and women ranked fifth and ninth, respectively, in the Great Lakes Regional polls.

ZIPS RANK AMONG NATION'S BEST IN 2021 TFRRS RANKINGS: Akron had a trio of student-athletes ranked in the top-25 nationally by the Track and Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS) during the 2021 indoor campaign, including, junior Nuh Andu, who was sixth in the nation in the men's high jump (7-2.25/2.19m).
Also rated among the top-25 was freshman Hunter Garretson (11th in the men's pole vault – 17-9.75 (5.43m) and senior Hesham Eldesouky (17th in the men's triple jump – 51-10.50/15.81m).

CRACKING THE ALL-TIME TOP-FIVE PERFORMANCES: The Zips posted 10 overall top-five performances in program history during the 2021 indoor campaign.

A YEAR AGO: The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2021 indoor campaign registering 15 victories as part of 29 overall top-three performances at the Akron Quad at the Stiles Athletic Field House on Jan. 15, 2021.

The Zips bested the field in the men's competition as Akron registered 167 points to edge Eastern Michigan (131.50), Buffalo (78.50) and Kent State (68). In the women's field, the Eagles led the field with 159 points, followed by Akron (118.50), Kent State (60.50) and Buffalo (56).
