AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2021 indoor campaign registering 15 victories as part of 29 overall top-three performances at the Akron Quad at the Stiles Athletic Field House on Friday, Jan. 15.
The Zips bested the field in the men's competition as Akron registered 167 points to edge Eastern Michigan (131.50), Buffalo (78.50) and Kent State (68). In the women's field, the Eagles led the field with 159 points, followed by Akron (118.50), Kent State (60.50) and Buffalo (56).
Junior Amir Willis (Cincinnati, Ohio) captured a pair of sprints for Akron recording the fifth-fastest time in Akron indoor history in the men's 60 meters crossing the line in 6.73, before taking the men's 200 meters in a time of 21.38.
Willis culminated his efforts on the evening as part of the victorious men's 4x400 relay squad of freshman Jameel Williamson (Columbus, Ohio), senior Andrew Wahl (Northfield, Ohio) and sophomore Zarik Brown (Dayton, Ohio), which crossed the line first in 3:16.96.
Junior Jacqueline Pokuaah (Akron, Ohio) headlined the field in the women's long jump with a career-best mark of 19-10.75 (6.06m), the fifth-longest jump in indoor program history. She later won the women's 200 meters in a career-best time 25.05 after placing second in the women's 60 meters with a time of 7.60.
Redshirt junior Abby Helminiak (Toledo, Ohio) earned her first-ever victory in the women's pole vault eclipsing 13-0.25 (3.97m), while freshman Hunter Garretson (Newcomerstown, Ohio) and sophomore Sebastian Martin (Santiago, Chile) claimed the top-two spots in the men's pole vault eclipsing 17-0.75 (5.20m) and 16-0.75 (4.90m), respectively.
The Zips claimed the top-two spots in the men's long jump as sophomore Dimitrije Novakovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and freshman Christian Mayfield (University Heights, Ohio) registered marks of 23-6 (7.16m) and 22-6.50 (6.87m). Novakovic went on to win the men's triple jump with a mark of 46-5.25 (14.15m), while Mayfield placed second with a career-best mark of 45-4.25 (13.82m).
Senior Andre Bollam-Godbott (Brunswick, Ohio) captured the men's mile in a time of 4:12.93, while sophomore Sophia Leto (Mt. Orab, Ohio) placed second in the women's mile in a career-best time of 5:18.58.
Junior Nuh Andu (Doha, Qatar) triumphed in the men's high jump with a clearance of 6-11.50 (2.12m).
Brown crossed the line first in the men's 400 meters in a time of 47.23, while freshman Janay Bass (Akron, Ohio) placed second in the women's 400 meters in a career-best time of 58.26.
Sophomore Blake Lucius (Crestline, Ohio) and junior Oliver Huffman (Augusta, Ga.) went 1-2 in the men's 800 meters crossing the line in 1:53.97 and 1:55.39, respectively.
Junior Kyra Keurentjes (Wehl, The Netherlands) registered a career-best time of 2:14.03 to earn the victory in the women's 800 meters, while junior Lizzy Gurko (Northfield, Ohio) crossed the line second in 2:15.08. Gurko later went on to capture the women's 3,000 meters in a time of 10:32.75.
The Zips' 4x400 relay team of Bass, junior Sara Foster (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Keurentjes and freshman Sage Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa.) finished second in a time of 3:57.92.
The Zips return to competition hosting rival Kent State in a dual meet at the Stile Athletics Field House on Friday, Jan. 22.
